New Paltz Tops Utica in Non-Conference Action

Adriana Surprenant scored her first goal of the season
Box Score New Paltz, NY (9/6/14)- The Utica College field hockey team had its season-opening win streak snapped Saturday as it fell to host SUNY New Paltz, 4-2.

Utica jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 8:40 into the contest as senior Louise Steele-Norton (Avondale, PA/Millbrook School) scored her third goal of the season.  Steele-Norton came down on a 2-on-1 with classmate Chasity Eckert (Afton, NY/Afton Central) and buried the pass from Eckert to take the lead.  The Pioneers added another goal just before the half as senior Adriana Surprenant (Utica, NY/New York Mills Jr-Sr High) buried a long shot for her first goal of the year.

The second half was all New Platz as the Hawks scored four unanswered goals to seal the victory.  Deidre O'Connor and Erin Landy each had a goal and an assist and Dani Ackerman and Jessica Caruana also scored for New Paltz.  Junior Kells Casey (Sandwich, MA/Kimball Union Academy) made a season-high eight saves, while her counterpart, Alayna Wageman had six saves.

Utica moves to 2-1 on the season, while the Hawks improve to 3-0.  The Pioneers return to action next Saturday as they host Hartwick College for their Empire 8 Conference opener.  Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
