UTICA, NY- SUNY Polytechnic came back from a two-set deficit to down the Utica College volleyball team 3-2 in non-conference action at the Harold T. Clark Athletic Center Thursday evening.
With the win, the Wildcats stretch their winning streak to 17 games and improve to 17-2 on the year. Utica, meanwhile, drops to 4-20. This marks just the fourth time all season that SUNY has lost more than one set in a game.
Utica took a commanding two-set lead as it won 25-22 and 25-17. The Wildcats rebounded, opening the third set on an 8-1 tear. UC battled back and faced a 24-21 hole before knotting the score at 24-24. After trading points, the visitors were finally able to get the winner as they took the third set by a score of 27-25. The Pioneers fought valiantly, but the Wildcats had the momentum as they went on to win the final two sets by scores of 25-16 and 15-13, respectively.
The Wildcats registered an impressed 12 service aces, while the Pioneers had a commanding 11-3 ledger in blocks. Freshman
Hannah Voss (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) matched her career-high of 17 kills and added 12 digs in the loss. Freshman
Nicole Herringshaw (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) and senior
Lora Allen (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) each had career days as well. Herringshaw collected a season-high seven blocks, while Allen's 47 assists were a career-best.
Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) and
Laura Homer-Gunther (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) combined for 25 kills and three blocks, while
Alexis Lyon (Prospect, NY/Holland Patent) led the squad with 29 digs. Allen also chipped in on the defensive side with a season-high 25 digs.
The Pioneers return to action this weekend as they travel to Elmira, NY for the Elmira College Invitational. On Friday UC takes on SUNY Geneseo (2 p.m.) and SUNY Cortland (6 p.m.). On Saturday Utica will face The City College of New York (10 a.m.), and Hunter College (2 p.m.).
