MARCY, NY – The Utica College men's basketball outscored SUNY Polytechnic 19-6 in the final 4:05 of regulation to rally for a 79-72 non-conference victory on the road Tuesday afternoon. The Pioneers trailed 66-60 with 4:05 left in regulation until freshman
Jonathan Wilson (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) netted eight points down the stretch, including two key 3-pointers, to spark the Pioneers to their second consecutive victory.
Jawan Simmons (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) and
Robert Tutein (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) led the Pioneers with 17 points each. Simmons also added 12 rebounds and was 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, including a clutch three down the stretch to help the Pioneers rally for the victory. Utica's record moved to 2-3 overall on the year, while SUNY Poly dropped to 1-2 on the year.
Utica jumped out to a nine point lead, 23-14, after
Justin Mayers (Hastings, NY/Hastings on the Hudson) drilled a 3-pointer with 8:19 to go in the first half of play. The home team rallied in the closing minutes of the first half and cut the Pioneer lead to 32-30 as the first half buzzer sounded.
The Wildcats led by as many as seven points, 55-48, with 8:47 remaining in regulation until the Pioneers rallied with a 21-13 run in the next six minutes to take a 69-68 lead with 2:47 left on the game clock.
Carl Taylor (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) chipped in with 13 points and five assists for Utica, while Wilson finished the game with nine.
Ivan Iton (Ossining, NY/Ossining) and
Seamus McHugh (Latham, NY/Shaker) each added five points for the Pioneers and
Andrew Druziak (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam ) tallied six points on 2-of-3 shooting from the floor.
Terrynce Wilson netted a game-high 22 points for the Wildcats while Quayshaun Mitchell added 18 points and ten boards.
The Pioneers connected on 10-of-16 3-pointers on the afternoon and shot 52.7% from the floor.
Utica returns to the hardwood after the Thanksgiving holiday on December 1
st when the Pioneers host SUNY Canton at 5 p.m.
