Game Recap: Softball |

Rochester Uses Walk Off Grand Slam to Top UC

Rochester, NY (4/15/15)- The Utica College softball team lost a non-conference doubleheader to host University of Rochester, 4-0 in the first game and 9-5 in a ten-inning affair in game two.

The Pioneers (10-12) have now lost six straight, including three in extra innings.  Utica looks to get back on track this weekend as it hosts Nazareth College and St. John Fisher College on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.  Game time both days is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Utica's Greenman Field.

Utica 0, U of R 4- Game One Final
The Yellow Jackets scored one run in the bottom of the first inning and added three more scores in the fourth to pick up their 17th win of the season.  Rochester's Brittany Grage was solid in the circle as she allowed just three hits and struck out six in the complete game victory.

Alysa Russell (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville), Alaina Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda), and Dominique Soto (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) each had hits for UC, while Abby Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) and Brittany Meka (Averill Park, NY/Averill Park) combined for four strikeouts.  Russell also added one stolen base.

Utica 5, U of R 9- Game Two Final (10 Innings)
Rochester used a two-out walk off grand slam in the bottom of the tenth inning to earn a comeback victory over the Pioneers.  Utica got off on the right foot as the Pioneers plated one run in the top of the first inning as Courtney Fitzgerald (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) hit a double to score Sabrina Stransky (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place).  It was short lived however, as the Yellow Jackets scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.  Fitzgerald once again put the Pioneers on top in the third inning as she blasted a three-run shot to left field, scoring Alaina Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) and Alysa Russell (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville).

Rochester added one run in the fourth to tie the game, however neither team was able to score over the next five innings, leading to an exciting tenth inning.  Stransky gave UC a one-run cushion as she drove in Russell, however U of R was able to plate five runs in the bottom of the inning to seal the win.

Freshman Kimberly Beattie (Levitton, NY/Division Ave) finished the game going 3-for-4 at the plate, while Stransky was 3-for-5 with one run scored. Fitzgerald was 2-for-5 with four RBI, including her team-leading third homerun of the season, while Wickwire, Stephanie Siriano (Sauquoit, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill), and Cassie Smith (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) each had one hit.

Wickwire shouldered the loss as she allowed five earned runs in seven innings of work, while Stransky gave up five hits in 2.2 innings.  Eleni Wechsler and Brittany Grage combined for six strikeouts for Rochester.
