Utica, NY (4/17/15)- The Utica College men's tennis team returns home this weekend as it hosts Empire 8 foe Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday and non-conference opponent Sage College on Sunday. Saturday's match up is set for 3 p.m. while Sunday's start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: Utica is coming off an 8-1 loss at Hartwick in Empire 8 action on Wednesday… Junior
Matt Rogers (East Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) led the way for UC as he picked up his first win of the season… Rogers took Hartwick's No. 2, Brian Redder, into three frames before grabbing the victory (4-6, 6-4, 10-7). He also battled in doubles competition as he teamed up with
Joe Castellitto (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac)… The duo collected three points however ended up falling to Hartwick's Liam Brown and John Talbot, 8-3.
THE SEASON SO FAR: Utica is 0-7 overall and 0-5 in Empire 8 Conference play… The Pioneers have picked up wins by
Matt Rogers (East Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) and
Raphael Warnon (Rock Tavern, NY/Washingtonville) on the season… UC has six matches left, including four at its home court.
SCOUTING STEVENS: The nationally ranked No. 24 Stevens Ducks are currently 12-5 overall and sit atop the E8 with a 4-0 mark in league play… They are coming off a 7-2 win over NYU on Wednesday… Stevens is led by sophomore Charles Drake, who is 10-3 overall.
SCOUTING SAGE: The Gators are 1-7 overall and 1-5 in the Skyline Conference… Sage is coming off a 7-2 loss to MCLA on Thursday… Sage is led by Troy Hansen, who has a team-best three wins on the season… Utica is 2-0 against Sage since 2013… Last year, the Pioneers topped the Gators 5-4 thanks to Rogers and Warnon, who combined for three of UC's five points.
LOOKING AHEAD: The Pioneers remain home Wednesday as they host Oswego State in non-conference action… Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
