Stevens Spoils Utica's Playoff Hopes

Utica, NY (4/25/15)- The Utica College softball team was eliminated from playoff contention Saturday afternoon as it dropped a pair of Empire 8 Conference contests to visiting Stevens Institute of Technology, 12-3 and 13-7.

The Pioneers fall to 14-16 overall and they wrap up Empire 8 Conference play with a 6-8 record in the league.  UC has two non-conference doubleheaders this week, at home on Tuesday against Cazenovia (4 p.m.), and across town at SUNY Poly (3:30 p.m.) on Wednesday.

Utica 3, Stevens 12- Game One Final (5 Inn.)
Errors proved costly in the opening game, as the Ducks converted on six Utica errors in the first two innings to take an 8-2 lead.  That was all Stevens would need as it went on to win its 21st game of the year.

Five Pioneers registered hits in the first game including Alysa Russell (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville), Samantha Husak (Jackson, MI/Grass Lake), Stephanie Siriano (Sauquoit, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill), Sabrina Stransky (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place), and Alaina Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda).  Strnasky drove in two runs with a stand up double in the bottom of the first, while Siriano picked up one RBI in the fifth.

Utica 7, Stevens 13- Game Two Final
The Ducks once again jumped out to a commanding 6-0 lead in the first two and a half innings, before the Pioneers were finally able to get on the board with three scores in the bottom of the third.

Stephanie Siriano (Sauquoit, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) and Alysa Russell (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) were each 3-for-4 in game two, with Russell hitting one home run and Siriano recording back-to-back blasts in the final three innings.  Freshman Dominique Soto (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) also registered her first career home run for the Pioneers.

Freshman Samantha Husak (Jackson, MI/Grass Lake) was 2-for-2, while Alaina Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) was 2-for-4 and Courtney Fitzgerald (Albany, NY/Colonie Central), Sabrina Stransky (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place), Kassidy Ogren (Albany, NY/Colonie Central), and Soto each had one hit.  Abby Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) and Brittany Meka (Averill Park, NY/Averill Park) combined for six strikeouts, while Olivia Gemma fanned one in the win.
