Volleyball Earns Split on Day 2 at Potsdam

POTSDAM, NY- The Utica College volleyball team split on the final day of the SUNY Potsdam Tournament Saturday afternoon.  UC fell to SUNY Canton 3-0, before cruising past Johnson State 3-0.  Senior Laura Homer-Gunther (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) was named to the All-Tournament team for her performance over the four matches this weekend.
 
Utica 0, SUNY Canton 3- Game One Final
SUNY Canton stretched its unbeaten streak to seven games as it topped Utica to win the tournament.  The Roos have now only lost one set all year.  Freshman Hannah Voss (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) led the Utica attack with seven kills, while sophomore Samantha Hoerning (Farmingville, NY/Sachem East) added five kills and registered a team-best .500 hitting percentage. 
 
Senior Alexis Lyon (Prospect, NY/Holland Patent) led the Utica defense with 14 digs, while freshman Leah Octave (New Windsor, NY/Cornwall) chipped in with 10 digs of her own.  Lora Allen (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) added 18 assists in the loss.
 
Utica 3, Johnson State 0- Game Two Final
The Pioneers turned things around in the second game of the day as they crushed Johnson State College.  Utica beat the Badgers in most statistical categories as the Pioneers had a 30-6 advantage in kills, 20-2 mark in service aces, and UC totaled 52 more digs than its opponent. 
 
Five players recorded hitting percentages of .500 or better, led by Laura Homer-Gunther (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) with a .750 percentage.  Samantha Hoerning (Farmingville, NY/Sachem East), Nicole Herringshaw (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse), Brianna Ettori (Hampton, NY/Granville), and Anna Bush (Croghan, NY/Beaver River) also had strong days at the net. 
 
Herringshaw led the Pioneers with seven kills, while Hoerning and Hannah Voss (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) added five kills each.  Voss had a huge day at the service line as she racked up a career-best nine aces. 
 
Homer-Gunther currently leads the Empire 8 Conference with a .491 hitting percentage, while Alexis Lyon (Prospect, NY/Holland Patent) leads the E8 with 5.78 digs per set. 
 
The Pioneers (2-7) return to action next weekend as they travel to Oswego for a tournament hosted by Oswego State.  The four-game weekend kicks off Friday at 4 p.m. as UC takes on the Oswego State Lakers.
