UTICA, NY – The Utica College men's soccer team scored all three of its goals in a span of just 6:21 late in the first half of play to earn a 3-1 victory over visiting Wells College on Sunday night at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. UC sophomore
Bita Gazashvili (Tiblisi, Georgia) tied his career-high with two goals in a span of 4:21, including his second goal of the day with six seconds left on the first half clock.
The Pioneers have now won two of their last three games and moved their record to 2-4 overall on the year headed into a three game road trip that begins with Cazenovia College on Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
Utica's
Raine Owens (Pine Plains, NY/Stissing Mt. ) opened the scoring on the day with his first goal of the season – and the third of his career – when he headed home a
Justin Schray (Oxford, NY/Oxford) cross in the 38
th minute to give the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage.
Wells answered 1:11 later when Tyler Morris netted his first goal of the season off a corner kick from Benjamin Schanbacher to knot the score at 1-1 in the 39
th minute.
Gazashvili then took over late in the first half. His first goal of the day came after a beautiful through ball from freshman
Julian Fonseca (Rocky Hill, CT/Bridgton). Fonseca slipped a pass to the foot of Gazashvili, who then made a few touches, and chipped the shot over the head of Wells goalie Michael Sciotti to give Utica a 2-1 lead at 40:33.
Gazashvili then gave UC a two goal cushion when he used his speed to beat a pair of Wells defenders down the left sideline and connected on his second goal of the day with just six seconds left in the first half of play.
The Pioneer defense stood strong for the remainder of the contest to secure the 3-1 victory for the home team. UC goalie
Nick Hallett (Adams, NY/South Jefferson CSD) stopped five shots in his second collegiate victory.
Wells outshot Utica 15-14 on the day and also earned a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Pioneers are 8-1 against Wells in the last 11 seasons and they have outscored the Express 25-8 in that stretch. Sunday night Utica avenged last season's 2-1 loss at Wells College.
Wells dropped to 2-3 overall on the year. Sciotti made three saves in goal for the Express.
