Nazareth Defeats UC in Double Overtime Thriller

UTICA, NY – The Utica College field hockey team dropped a heartbreaker, 4-3, in double overtime to visiting Nazareth College on Wednesday night at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.  After trailing 3-1 early in the second half, the Pioneers rallied with the final two goals of regulation to force overtime.  Just 1:02 into the second overtime, Naz's Kailee Coleman pushed home the game-winner in the far left corner of the cage after a penalty corner shot from Magill Woodruff, to snap the Pioneers nine game home conference winning streak that dated back to 2012.

Utica's record fell to 2-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play while Naz improved to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the E8.

Utica freshman Rylee Meelan (Clinton, NY/Clinton) was stellar on the offensive end once again for the Pioneers as she netted two goals to lead the way for the home team.  The Pioneers fell into an early 2-0 hole, until Meelan netted her third goal of the season to cut the UC deficit to 2-1 just 1:10 before the first half buzzer sounded. Utica freshman Jessica Belt (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder) registered her first collegiate assist on Meelan's first goal of the afternoon.

Nazareth then took a 3-1 lead 6:53 into the second half, but the Pioneers would not go down easy.  UC transfer Meghan McCormick (Ava, NY/RFA) netted her second goal of the season at the 57:40 mark, off an assist from Rachael Scaramuzzino (Utica, NY/Whitesboro), to make the score 3-2.

UC then tied the game up and forced overtime when Meelan scored her second of the night, and fourth of the season, at 59:43 to make the score 3-3 with just over ten minutes left in regulation.

Nazareth goalie Kimber Nourse stopped an incredible 21 shots, while Utica goalie Kells Casey (Sandwich, MA/Kimball Union Academy) made nine saves in the cage for the Pioneers.

Nazareth leading scorer Catherine Willard registered two goals on the evening to give her eight on the year. Utica earned 10 penalty corner opportunities on the afternoon and outshot the Golden Flyers 31-16.

UC returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Houghton College in Empire 8 Conference play at 1 p.m. at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
