UTICA, NY- The Utica College volleyball team opens up home play Wednesday night as it hosts SUNY Cobleskill for a non-conference match. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Clark Gymnasium.
FRESHMAN PHENOM: First year player
Hannah Voss (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) shined in her collegiate debut as she led UC with 34 kills at the SUNY Cortland Tournament last weekend... Voss currently ranks third on the squad with 29 digs and has also added one service ace… Her 3.78 kills per set currently rank first in the Empire 8 Conference.
LYON LEADING THE WAY: Senior
Alexis Lyon (Prospect, NY/Holland Patent) was named to the All-Tournament team at the SUNY Cortland tournament last weekend after collecting a team-high 66 digs... She also tallied two assists and two kills to guide the Pioneers.
HELPING OUT: Junior
Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) and senior
Laura Homer-Gunther (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) rank second and third in kills, respectively… Blaszak has totaled 25 kills, while Homer-Gunther has racked up 23 kills.
BLOCKING IT ALL: Six-foot one-inch freshman
Nicole Herringshaw (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) has provided a big presence at the net… Through four games, Herringshaw has totaled eight blocks, including seven solo… She is currently third in the conference with .80 blocks per set.
SCOUTING COBLESKILL: The Fighting Tigers are coming off a 0-3 weekend at the 2015 Blazer Invitational hosted by Elms College last weekend… Senior Raven Worthing leads the team with 30 kills, 56 digs, and six service aces, while freshman Michelle Urkevich has a team-best 47 assists.
AGAINST THE FIGHTING TIGERS: Utica is 5-1 against Cobleskill in the last three seasons… Last year, UC swept the season series with a pair of 3-0 victories over the Fighting Tigers…
Lora Allen (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) totaled 58 assists, four digs, and three aces in the series, while
Laura Homer-Gunther (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) had 10 kills and eight blocks, and
Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) led the squad with 19 kills and added three blocks.
LOOKING AHEAD: The Pioneers return to action this weekend as they travel to Potsdam, NY for four games at the SUNY Potsdam Tournament… UC opens the weekend at 4 p.m. Friday against Potsdam.
