GENEVA, NY- The Utica College women's hockey team downed host William Smith 1-0 in ECAC West Conference action Friday evening to pick up its first win of the young season.
With the win, Utica improves to 1-2 overall and 1-2 in league play. William Smith meanwhile drops to 2-3 (0-3 ECAC West). The teams wrap up the season series Sunday in Utica. Game time is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.
After a scoreless first period, sophomore
Elizabeth Dohner (Highlands Ranch, CO/Colorado Selects) broke the deadlock at 16:12 of the second period as she netted her first of the year. Senior
Emily Coope (Phoenix, AZ/Colorado Tigers) picked up her first point of the season with an assist on the play.
That was all the Pioneers needed as the UC defense, led by senior
Keira Goin (Dobbs Ferry, NY/Hotchkiss School) held strong. Goin finished with 22 saves on the evening to pick up her 10
th career shutout. UC held the Herons scoreless on four power play chances, while UC went 0-for-1 with the man advantage.
William Smith's Maggie Salmon totaled 39 saves in the loss.
