Women's Basketball Set to Open Season Tuesday at Potsdam

Utica, NY -- The Utica College women's basketball team opens up its 2016-17 campaign on Tuesday as the Pioneers travel to Potsdam State to take on the Bears at 5 p.m.

Meet the Coaching Staff

Veteran Leadership on the Sidelines: 
Head Coach Michele Davis is returning to Utica for her 17th season as head coach of the women's basketball program … Coach Davis, who is the program's all-time leader in career victories, holds an overall record of 220-195, which is good enough for a win percentage of .530 …  Davis has made eight conference tournament appearances while averaging nearly 14 wins per season in the last 16 years …  Throughout her tenure at UC, she has led Utica to two NCAA Tournament appearances, two Empire 8 Conference championships and four ECAC Tournament appearances … Joining Davis on the sidelines for her first year will be Assistant Coach Kayla Kibling, who was hired in the Summer of 2016 …  Kibling will assist head coach Michele Davis with all aspects of the program including scouting, recruiting, game and practice preparation, and day-to-day operations …  Prior to Utica, Kibling was a student-athlete at Onondaga Community College (OCC) and the University of Rochester …  At Rochester, Kibling was a two-year member of the women's basketball and softball teams … During the 2015-2016 basketball season, she started all 29 games and helped the team reach the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.

Meet the Pioneers
 
Lone Senior: Calypso Carty (Pipersville, PA/Central Bucks West), the only senior on the Pioneers' roster, returns after starting 24-of-25 games last season… Carty totaled 152 points, averaging 6.1 per game… She also led Utica shooting 76% from the line and she finished tied for the team-lead with six blocks… Carty was also second on the squad last season with 128 rebounds.
 
Veteran Leadership: Juniors Ashelyne Babb (Lynn, MA/Winthrop), Ashley Mayo (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet), and Alaina Tripp (Clyde, NY/Clyde-Savannah) will look to fill the void left by 1,000-point scorer Mary Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) due to graduation… The trio were regular starters last season and they have a combined 143 careers games under their belt… Babb averaged 11.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.72 steals, and 2.4 assists per game last season... She also led UC in scoring in eight of their 25 games, with her highest point total being 21 against St. John Fisher College on Feb. 1… Mayo finished third on the team with 9.1 points per game and four blocks… She also averaged 4.7 boards… Tripp led UC with 140 rebounds last year (5.6 per game) and six blocks… She also totaled 7.5 points per game.
 
Supporting Cast: Sophomore Rachel Hunter (West Islip, NY/West Islip) and juniors Amanda Henderson (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) and Maggie Tabone (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) will look for extended playing time this season… Hunter is coming off an impressive freshman campaign that saw her average 6.6 points per game off the bench… Henderson totaled 24 points and 31 rebounds in 16 games played, while Tabone racked up 83 rebounds while seeing action in all 25 games... Emily Pinckney (Canton, NY/Hugh C. Williams) and Alisha Kelly (Ambler, PA/Wissahickon) will also look to add depth for Utica.
 
Newcomers: The Pioneers brought in seven new players this year, including five freshmen, one sophomore, and one junior… UC will have four new guards in Nicolette Conkin (Los Altos, CA/Homestead), Marissa Woods (Westampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley), Michaela Scarafile, and Coralynn Maxwell (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley)... At the forward position, the Pioneers brought in Kaitlyn Krasney (Greenville, NY/Greenville), Sam Cichon (Clinton, NY/New Hartford), and Madison Norris.
 
A Look at the Schedule: The Pioneers 2016-17 schedule features 13 home games at the friendly confines of the Clark Athletic Center Gymnasium, eight of which are against Empire 8 Conference opponents … After taking on SUNY Potsdam in the season-opener on the road on Tuesday (5 p.m.), Utica will have four straight home games, starting with a contest against Oneonta on Thursday at 6 p.m… The Pioneers open up Empire 8 Conference play on Tuesday, Jan. 3 as they host Stevens Institute of Technology at 6 p.m.
