Utica, NY – The Utica College women's basketball team fell to Hamilton College on Monday, 64-46. Hamilton outscored Utica 27-15 in the fourth quarter to seal the deal. Junior
Ashley Mayo (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet)'s career-high of 20 points was not enough as the Pioneers' record now stands at 1-3 this season.
After falling behind early in the first quarter, Utica rallied with a 12-4 run in a span of 4:37 to make the score 14-13 with 1:13 left in the quarter. During the second quarter, Utica went on a quick 6-0 run in 2:24 to take its first lead of the game, 24-23, with 1:07 left before halftime. Hamilton hit a 3-point shot before the half as it led the Pioneers 26-24 at the end of the second quarter.
Ashley Mayo (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) led all scorers at halftime with 12 points.
Hamilton started off the second half on a 6-0 run in 6:00 to take a 32-24 lead with 4:00 left in the third period. Utica answered towards the end of the quarter with a 5-0 run in 2:10, making the score 32-29 with 2:47 left in the third. Going into the fourth quarter Hamilton held a 37-31 lead. The teams went back and forth the majority of the fourth until Hamilton went on a game clinching 17-5 run over the span of four minutes. The visitors took a 60-44 lead with 1:31 left remaining in the game. The Continentals held on down the stretch to earn the 18 point victory.
Mayo led the Pioneers in scoring with 20 points, as she was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line.
Ashelyne Babb (Lynn, MA/Winthrop) was shy of a double-double as she recorded nine points and eight rebounds. Freshman
Nicolette Conkin (Los Altos, CA/Homestead) was efficient off the bench, contributing five points and a career-high of six rebounds. Six players registered two points for UC, including
Calypso Carty (Pipersville, PA/Central Bucks West). Carty also picked up a season-high of five rebounds on the evening.
Hamilton College's Lauren Getman was the high scorer in the game as she recorded 28 points on 12-of-16 shooting, and added nine rebounds. Samantha Srinivasan was one point away from a double-double as she tallied nine points and 11 rebounds in the game. The Continentals registered 28 points in the paint and outrebounded UC, 45-31.
The Pioneers return home Wednesday as they host Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
