Early Lead Proves Too Much as Utica Falls at Union

Schenectady, NY -- The Utica College women's basketball team lost to host Union College 70-52 in non-league action at the Viniar Athletic Center on Monday night.  Sophomore Rachel Hunter (West Islip, NY/West Islip) tied her season-high for the Pioneers with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor.

The Dutchwomen, who scored a season high in points, evened their record at 3-3 while the Pioneers fell to 2-5.

Union led by 10 after the first quarter at 25-15, and took a 39-30 lead into the half. Utica got to within seven at 45-38 with 2:50 left in the third quarter on a layup by Ashelyne Babb (Lynn, MA/Winthrop), but the Dutchwomen led 54-40 after three. Union led by as many as 21 (70-49) with 1:08 remaining and held on for the convincing victory.

Babb totaled nine points, four steals and three rebounds, while Alaina Tripp (Clyde, NY/Clyde-Savannah) also chipped in with nine points and four rebounds for Utica. Ashley Mayo (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) posted four points, four rebounds and four steals. Junior Maggie Tabone (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) hauled in a team-best six rebounds for the Pioneers.

Jenni Barra scored a season high 15 points and Nicole Conley tallied 12 to lead Union to the 18 point victory. Erin Lyons scored 10 and Juliauna Dunlop added nine for the Dutchwomen while Alexa Morin scored eight. Lyons had a game high eight rebounds and Dunlop and Barra had five assists each for the Dutchwomen, who shot 48% and had a 37-34 rebounding advantage.

The Pioneers have a busy week as they return to the hardwood on Wednesday when they take on RPI at the Clark Athletic Center at 6 p.m. Utica will then travel to Morrisville State on Friday to take on the Mustangs at 6 p.m.
