Strong Shooting Performance Leads Fisher Past Utica

PITTSFORD, NY – The Utica College women's basketball team lost to host St. John Fisher College 94-68 in Empire 8 Conference action at Manning & Napier Varsity Gymnasium on Monday night.  Utica's Ashelyne Babb (Lynn, MA/Winthrop) led the Pioneers with a career-high 21 points, while senior Mary Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) added 13 points.

Utica's record moved to 7-12 overall and 2-8 in the Empire 8, while Fisher remained unbeaten at home and improved to 15-3 overall and 8-1 in the conference. The Cardinals rebounded from a 51-35 loss at the hands of conference foe Stevens on Friday.

The Pioneers will look to get back in the win column in game two of a three game road trip on Friday night when they travel to Elmira College to take on the Soaring Eagles in Empire 8 play at 8 p.m. UC wraps up its road trip on Saturday when it takes on Houghton at 4 p.m.

Utica's Ashley Mayo (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) netted 11 points and added four rebounds while sophomore classmate Alaina Tripp (Clyde, NY/Clyde-Savannah) posted a career-high 11 rebounds and added four points. Calypso Carty (Pipersville, PA/Central Bucks West) recorded three points, three rebounds and three steals for UC, while freshman Rachel Hunter (West Islip, NY/West Islip) added three points.

Five players scored in double-figures for the Cardinals, including Mary Kate Cusack (24), Claire Walsh (16), Emily Piacentini (13), Jessica Rhone (13) and Bridget Carney (11). Fisher converted on 12-of-23 3-point attempts and shot 59.6% from the floor.

The Pioneers registered 23 points off of 16 Fisher turnovers and also outscored the Cardinals 11-5 in the second chance point category.

Fisher went on a 17-2 run in the final 6:32 of the first quarter to take a 21-6 lead into the second quarter. The Cardinals held a 30-18 lead with 2:46 to go before the half and went on a 12-4 run before halftime to take a convincing 42-22 lead into the locker room.

The Cardinals extended their lead to as many as 38 points, 84-46, midway through the fourth quarter and did not look as back they ran away with the 92-60 victory.

The Pioneers made 21 free throws on the evening but also committed 23 fouls. 

Miceli still holds the team lead with an average of 14.0 points per game this season, while Babb continues to raise her season average and ranks second on the team with 12.2 points per game.
