KISSIMMEE, FL- After getting shutout in both games on Sunday, the Utica College softball team rebounded to earn two clean sheet victories, downing the University of Dubuque 3-0 and Farmingdale State 6-0 at the Rebel Spring Games on Monday.
Utica 3, Dubuque 0- Game One FinalAfter a scoreless first two innings, the Pioneers broke out with three hits, two runs and two left on base. The Pioneers got on the board in the bottom of the third inning as freshman
Nicole Rice (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) single through the left side to score senior
Alysa Russell (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) and sophomore
Kimberly Beattie (Levitton, NY/Division Ave).
Utica added another run in the fifth inning as senior
Stephanie Siriano (Sauquoit, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) hit a sacrifice bunt that scored Russell. That was all the Utica pitching staff needed as sophomore
Brittany Meka (Averill Park, NY/Averill Park) and freshman
Shannon Cool (Herkimer, NY/Herkimer) combined to strike out four batters en route to the shutout victory.
Russell, Rice, junior
Kassidy Ogren (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) and sophomore
Dominique Soto (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) each had one hit, with Russell recording a game-high two stolen bases. Soto also had a steal in the win.
Utica 6, Farmingdale State 0- Game Two Final The Pioneers jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they cruised to their second straight win. UC totaled five runs in the first two innings and added an insurance tally in the fifth to seal the victory.
Seniors
Stephanie Siriano (Sauquoit, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) and
Cassie Smith (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) were each 2-for-3 at the plate, with Smith collecting two RBIs and Siriano also driving in a run. Classmate
Alysa Russell (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and a team-high three stolen bases, while Siriano also picked up two steals, and
Nicole Rice (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) also stole one base. Rice and sophomore transfer
Rachel Baker (Schuylerville, NY/Schuylerville) also had hits on the day.
Senior
Abby Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) Struck out a career-high 10 batters and allowed just two hits in the shutout win. She now moves into second all-time on the College's career strikeout list, just four behind Pioneer Hall of Famer, Bobbi (McMail) Simon for first all-time.
Utica (2-2) returns to action Tuesday for games against Dickinson College (9 a.m.) and Springfield College (11:15 a.m.).
