UTICA, NY – The Utica College women's lacrosse team fell to visiting Oswego State, 13-5 in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon. The Pioneers are now 3-3 on the season while the Lakers improved to 3-1. Utica travels to Morrisville on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Three different players scored for UC on the day. Senior
Courtney Wheeler (Ava, NY/Rome Free Academy) led Utica with three points off of two goals and one assist while
Sara Hennessey (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) netted a career high two goals on the afternoon.
Rebecca Plunkett (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) added a goal for her team high 16
th goal of the season.
Kells Casey (Sandwich, MA/Kimball Union Academy) had two saves in the net for the Pioneers.
Emily Lange led the Lakers with four goals and three assists while Erannan Shattuck chipped in with two goals and three assists. Angela Ponto had a big performance in the net for Oswego stopping 14 shots.
The 0-0 tie was broken by Oswego after 7:59 of play in the first half. The Lakers struck again about three minutes later to take a 2-0 lead.
Rebecca Plunkett (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) put Utica on the board with 12:15 left to play to bring the Laker lead to one. Oswego dominated the rest of the first half, scoring six unanswered goals to take a 8-1 lead.
The Lakers continued to dominate adding two quick goals in the second half to take a 10-1 lead.
Sara Hennessey (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) and
Courtney Wheeler (Ava, NY/Rome Free Academy) scored back-to-back goals in a span of 43 seconds to make the score 10-3. Oswego netted three more goals to stretch the lead to 13-3. Utica scored the final two goals but the lead was just too much to overcome.
Utica earned a 19-15 shot on goal advantage on the day.
Maggie Notter (Clifton Springs, NY/Midlakes) had a game high four caused turnovers to go along with seven groundballs.
Courtney Wheeler (Ava, NY/Rome Free Academy) and
Rebecca Plunkett (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) had six and four draw controls, respectively. Wheeler also had a team high nine groundballs.
The Pioneers cleared 16-of-18 attempts and also won 13-of-20 draw controls. Utica also earned an impressive 14 free position attempts, including 10 in the second half.
