Baseball Falls in E8 Play at Stevens

HOBOKEN, NJ- The Utica College baseball team lost both games in an Empire 8 Conference matchup at Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday. Utica is now 1-12 overall with a 1-4 conference record. Stevens improves to 13-8 overall with a perfect 5-0-conference record. The Pioneers return to action this weekend for three Empire 8 games against Elmira. The teams play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. and return to the field on Sunday at 12 p.m.
 
Stevens 3, Utica 0-Game 1
 
JT Ross (New York Mills, NY/New York Mills) and Tim Quinlan (Monroe, CT/Masuck) led the offense for Utica with two hits apiece. Jake Ryan (Kingston, NY/Kingston) had the only other hit for UC as they were held to five hits on the day. Ed Zakrzewski (Rome, NY/Rome Catholic) was on the mound for Utica and pitched six innings giving up eight hits, three earned runs, and striking out six.
 
Zeph Walters got the start for the Ducks and went five innings allowing four hits and striking out five. Ryan Patterson saw one inning of action striking out two while Andrew Hamel pitched one inning, striking out one, giving up one hit, and earning the save. Nick Sieber led the offense with two hits and two RBI's.
 
Stevens got on the board in the second inning when Matthew Pasko singled home Walters. In the third inning Stevens made the lead 2-0 when Sieber doubled home Nolan Bennett. The scoring was capped off in the fifth inning when Sieber singled home Bennett to make it 3-0.
 
Stevens 12, Utica 4-Game 2
 
Eight different players had hits for UC while Matthew DeMartino (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) led the team with two hits. Jake Ryan (Kingston, NY/Kingston), Tim Quinlan (Monroe, CT/Masuck), and Andrew Hobika, Jr. (Clinton, NY/Clinton) all had one RBI. Josh Luczak (Ava, NY/RFA) got the start and went five innings giving up 11 hits and eight runs (six earned runs) while striking out three. Gavin McCann (Highland, NY/Highland) pitched two scoreless innings while giving up two hits. James Corcoran (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) pitched one inning giving up five hits and four runs.
 
Nolan Bennett had four hits and one RBI while Zeph Walters picked up two hits and three RBI's for the Ducks. Charlie Ruegger got the start for Stevens and went five innings allowing seven hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out eight batters. Quinn DiPasquale, Ryan Larsen, Nick Muglia, and Danny McIntyre each pitched one inning. Larsen gave up one earned run while Muglia allowed an unearned run to cross the plate.
 
Stevens jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Utica would get one back in its half of the second when Tim Quinlan (Monroe, CT/Masuck) singled home DeMartino. The Ducks added five runs in their half of the second to make it 7-1. Utica put a run across in the fourth to cut the lead to 7-2 when Jake Ryan (Kingston, NY/Kingston) hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Christian Tiffin (Sherrill, NY/VVS) to score. Stevens would score in the sixth to get the lead back to six runs. Utica would cut the lead scoring a run in the seventh when Hobika Jr. hit home Vincent Burillo (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central ) and a run in the eighth when Zachary Schellenger (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) scored on a failed pickoff attampt to make it 8-4. In the bottom of the eighth inning Stevens shut the door scoring four runs including a big three run homerun by Michael Mule to make it 12-4.
