ROCHESTER, NY- The Utica College softball team held on to top nationally ranked No. 12 St. John Fisher College 2-0 to earn a split in Empire 8 Conference action Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers dropped the first game of the double header 4-2.

Kassidy Ogren (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) hit a two-run homer to break the deadlock. The Cardinals responded in the bottom of the fifth to plate three runs on four hits to take the lead. Fisher added an insurance run in the sixth inning to improve to 13-2 on the year.
Seniors
Alysa Russell (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) and
Cassie Smith (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) as well as sophomore
Kimberly Beattie (Levitton, NY/Division Ave) had one hit each. Sophomore
Brittany Meka (Averill Park, NY/Averill Park) struck out two in six innings of work, while Fisher's Lindsey Thayer fanned nine to improve to 8-0 on the year.

Abby Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) struck out a career-high 13 batters and hit an RBI single to help lift the Pioneers to the game two victory over the Cardinals. Monroe, who is the College's career strikeout leader, now has 63 strikeouts in just nine appearances this season. She is currently second in the conference with a .91 ERA.

Nicole Rice (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) singled down the left field line to score sophomore
Rachel Baker (Schuylerville, NY/Schuylerville). The Pioneers added another tally in the sixth as Monroe helped her own cause by driving in sophomore
Sabrina Stransky (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place).
Fisher was finally able to solve Monroe as the Cardinals earned their first two hits of the game in the sixth inning, however the Utica defense held strong to hang on for the victory. Rice and Stransky each had two hits, while
Cassie Smith (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central),
Stephanie Siriano (Sauquoit, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill), Monroe, and Baker each had one hit. Thayer finished with four strike outs in the loss.
Utica (10-10, 1-1 Empire 8) returns to action Wednesday as it travels to Oswego State for a non-conference match up. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
