Baseball Sweeps SUNY Poly in Doubleheader

MARCY, NY – The Utica College baseball team won both games of a doubleheader against SUNY Poly on Wednesday. Utica won the first game 10-6 while exploding on offense for an 18-7 victory in the second game. UC improves to 6-17 overall with a 4-8-conference record while the Wildcats fall to 12-15 overall with a 4-2 NEAC record. The Pioneers return to action on Friday when they travel to face non-conference opponent Hilbert for a doubleheader. The games are set to start at 1 p.m.
 
Utica 10, SUNY Poly 6-Game 1
 
Joshua Webb (Verona, NY/VVS) started on the mound for Utica and went two innings giving up three hits and one unearned run while striking out one. Josh Luczak (Ava, NY/RFA) would pitch 2.1 innings giving up six hits and five earned runs. Gavin McCann (Highland, NY/Highland) would pitch the final 2.2 innings giving up only two hits and earning the save. Tim Quinlan (Monroe, CT/Masuck) (2-for-4, 2 RBIs, and one run scored) and JT Ross (New York Mills, NY/New York Mills) (2-for-5, two RBIs, and one run scored) led the offense for the Pioneers.
 
SUNY Poly started Jared Muraca who went two innings and gave up one hit and two unearned runs. Duke Schneider pitched one inning giving up no hits and no runs and was replaced by Alex Helenek who pitched two innings and gave up five hits and six runs (four earned). Paul Wozniak pitched two innings and gave up two hits and two runs. Tyler Vyce led the Wildcat offense going 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.
 
The Wildcats started the scoring in the first inning putting a run on the board to take a 1-0 lead. UC would turn a one run deficit into a one run lead in the second inning when two runs scored. Utica scored next when it broke the game wide open with a six run fourth to take a commanding 8-1 lead. SUNY Poly did not go down without a fight having a big inning putting up five runs in the fifth to cut the lead to 8-6. The Pioneers added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings to seal a 10-6 victory.
 
Utica 18, SUNY Poly 7-Game 2
 
UC started Ethan Bliss (Cooperstown, NY /Cooperstown) who went four innings giving up six hits and five runs (four earned). James Corcoran (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) (two hits, one earned run, and one strikeout) pitched one inning while William Winsman (Palatine Bridge, NY/Canajoharie) (three hits, one earned run, and one strikeout) pitched two in relief. Quinlan would lead the offense going 3-for-6 with five RBIs and three runs scored. Quinlan hit his first collegiate grand slam in the third inning. Vincent Burillo (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central ) chipped in on offense going 3-for-5 with three RBIs, three runs scored, and a walk.
 
Sawyer Haney would get the nod on the mound for the Wildcats and go one inning giving up two hits and five runs (two earned). SUNY Poly used six pitchers in relief for the rest of the game. Dante Rose led the Wildcat offense going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

The Pioneers jumped on the board with a big five run first inning and expanded the lead to 6-0 after a one run second inning. The third inning was more offensive output for Utica when the team put up seven runs for a commanding 13-0 lead. SUNY Poly got on the board in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 13-2. The Wildcats cut even more into the lead with a three run fourth inning to make it 13-5. Both teams notched a run in the sixth to make it 14-6. Utica added three more runs in the sixth inning and one more in the top of the seventh to take a huge 18-6 lead. The Wildcats attempted a comeback but would only put up one run ending the game at 18-7.
