PLATTSBURGH, NY- The Utica College volleyball team went 1-1 on the second day of the Plattsburgh Invitational on Saturday. The Pioneers fell to the Cardinals 3-0 before rebounding to knock off Elms College 3-1. UC finished the weekend going 2-1 and the Pioneers have now won three of their last four games.
Plattsburgh 3, Utica 0- Game One Final
Plattsburgh jumped out to a quick two-set lead as it downed UC 25-18 and 25-8, before Utica fought to a 26-24 loss in the third and final set. The Pioneers were limited to .125 hitting for the contest but did out block the Cardinals, 2-0.
Senior
Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) led UC with 10 kills and one block, while sophomores
Hannah Voss (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) and
Nicole Herringshaw (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) combined for 15 kills on the afternoon. Voss also recorded a team-best 10 digs and added nine assists. Freshman
Megan Weiss (Windsor, CT/Northwest Catholic) led the squad with 11 assists, while
Leah Octave (New Windsor, NY/Cornwall) had nine digs and freshman
Monique Fletcher (Waterford, CT/Norwich Free Academy) chipped in with six digs of her own.
Utica 3, Elms 1- Game Two Final
UC went up 2-0 is it took the first set 25-22 and the second, 25-15, before the Blazers were able to rebound and win the third set 25-20. UC regrouped, however, to cruise to a 25-19 win in the fourth set to secure its third victory in the last four outings.
UC had 47 kills compared to Elms' 28. The Pioneers also had five more aces than Elms (13-8) and totaled six blocks while holding the Blazers without a block in the contest.
Blaszak once again led Utica with 10 kills and she tied freshman
Paige Klock (Herkimer, NY/Herkimer) for the team lead with two blocks on the evening. Blaszak, who is the College's career kills leader, needs just 109 more kills to reach the 1,000 mark for her career.
Sophomore
Hannah Voss (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) totaled a career-high 23 assists and added six aces and eight kills, while freshman
Monique Fletcher (Waterford, CT/Norwich Free Academy) had a season-high 10 kills in the win.
Junior
Abigail Mosenthin (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) had a team-high ten digs, while
Leah Octave (New Windsor, NY/Cornwall) had nine digs and
Andreana Kroup (Gloversville, NY/Gloversville) chipped in with seven of her own.
UC will open up Empire 8 Conference play on the road on Tuesday as it takes on Hartwick College. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
