UTICA, NY- The Utica College men's soccer team will travel to Wells College Tuesday for a non-conference game. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: Utica played host to Empire 8 Conference opponent Alfred University last Friday as part of this year's homecoming events. Unfortunately, the Pioneers let this one slip away, losing 2-1.
Bita Gazashvili (Tiblisi, Georgia) scored the Pioneers' only goal of the day, his third of the season. The Saxons' leading scorer Richard Lander ultimately scored the game winning goal with a little over 20 minutes to play to give Alfred the victory.
HEATING UP: Junior midfielder
Bita Gazashvili (Tiblisi, Georgia) continues to play well for the Pioneers. He currently leads the team in points (seven) with three goals and one assist. Gazashvili is third in the Empire 8 Conference in goals scored and fourth in total points. All seven of his points this season have come in the last five games.Â
SPREADING THE WEALTH: Aside from the success Gazashvili has had so far this season, a few other Pioneers have been playing well also. Junior goalkeeper
Matthew Milograno (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) leads the Empire 8 in saves per game (6.00). Additionally,
Joseph Hunter (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth-Whitemarsh) and
Cheick Tounkara (Bronx, NY) rank in the top-10 in the Empire 8 with one assist apiece.
SCOUTING WELLS: The Express are currently 3-2-2 on the season and are riding the highs of a two-game winning streak. Wells has had some trouble getting the ball into the net as they have been shut out three times in seven games. Christian Garavito leads the Express with four goals this season, while Adam Whitaker ranks second on the team with two goals to go along with one assist.
AGAINST THE EXPRESS: In 2006, the Pioneers defeated Wells 8-0 in its first season as a varsity program. Since then, Utica has outscored Wells 20-8. The Pioneers have only lost to the Express one time in program-history (2014).
LOOKING AHEAD: UC will play host to Ithaca College on Saturday, with hopes of having a turnaround during the month of October. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
