UC Field Hockey Travels to Washington & Jefferson Saturday

Utica, NY-The Utica College field hockey team is on the road again to faceoff against Washington & Jefferson College.  Game time starts at 1 p.m. this Saturday.

LAST TIME OUT: The Pioneers suffered a 7-0 home shutout loss against the Hamilton Continentals on Wednesday.  Freshman Fiona Shea (East Greenbush, NY/East Greenbush) had four shots on goal and sophomore Rylee Meelan (Clinton, NY/Clinton) had three shots on goal.  Utica's record fell to 2-8 after the shutout.

LEADING THE WAY: Since no Utica player scored on Wednesday, sophomore Rylee Meelan (Clinton, NY/Clinton) and senior Rachael Scaramuzzino (Utica, NY/Whitesboro) are still the team's leading scorers.  Meelan has four goals and one assist while Scaramuzzino is tied with Meelan for the team lead with four goals.

RECENT SUCCESS: Despite falling to Hamilton College on Wednesday night, the Pioneers have won two of their last four contests, including a convincing 6-0 win on the road at Keuka College on Sunday … UC also picked up its first Empire 8 win of the season against previously undefeated Hartwick College on Sept. 20, 2016.

SCOUTING WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON: Washington & Jefferson is undefeated.  They sit 8-0 and are 3-0 in the Empire 8 Conference.   The team's last three games were shutout victories.  Amanda Steffey, Rachel Buyan, and Judy Yurkofsky are all leading the team in goals scored.  They have each scored six goals this season.

AGAINST WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON:  The Pioneers seem to have no problems playing against Washington & Jefferson.  They beat the Presidents in four out of the last six meetings.  Their last victory, against Washington & Jefferson, was on Oct. 10, 2015.  The game took place at the Pioneers' home field.  The game was tied 1-1 late in the second half, but Melissa Koch (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) scored the second and game-winning goal for Utica.

LOOKING AHEAD: The Pioneers head back home next Thursday (Oct. 6) to take on the Skidmore Thoroughbreds.  Game time is 7 p.m.  Then the Pioneers will go back on the road to faceoff against two more Empire 8 opponents, Nazareth College and Houghton College.
