New Paltz Rallies to Down UC Field Hockey

CANTON, NY- The Utica College field hockey team dropped its final game of the St. Lawrence Tournament as it fell to SUNY New Paltz, 4-1, Sunday afternoon.

Utica jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead just 2:02 into the contest as sophomore Tiffany Evans (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) netted her first of the season, off an assist from junior Melissa Koch (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa).  The Hawks responded at 7:42 as Colleen Roemer scored an unassisted tally.

New Paltz added another score in the final ten minutes of the first frame to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.  The Hawks extended their lead with a pair of goals in the second half to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Evans, Rylee Meelan (Clinton, NY/Clinton), and freshman Fiona Shea (East Greebush, NY/East Greenbush) led the Pioneers with two shots each.  Junior Samantha Whitehouse (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich) had an impressive game in net, as she made a career-high 18 saves.  18 saves in a single-game ranks third all-time at UC.

Utica (0-2) will look to bounce back on Saturday as it opens Empire 8 Conference play at Ithaca College.  Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
