UTICA, NY- The Utica College volleyball team looks to get back on track Wednesday night as it travels across town to take on local rival, SUNY Poly. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: The Pioneers are coming off a tough weekend at the Red Dragon Invitational, hosted by SUNY Cortland… Utica fell to Fredonia 3-0 and Wells 3-1 on Friday, before dropping a pair to Misericordia and Buffalo State on Saturday…
Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) led the way with 30 kills of the weekend, while sophomore
Leah Octave (New Windsor, NY/Cornwall) totaled a team-best 39 digs en route to being named to the All-Tournament team.
CHASING A MILESTONE: Senior
Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) is second all-time in career kills (821) and she needs just 13 more to move into first place all-time… Blaszak currently leads the team with 41 kills and has added eight digs and four blocks.
SUPER SOPHOMORES: Sophomores
Hannah Voss (St. Louis, MO/Oakville),
Nicole Herringshaw (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse), and
Leah Octave (New Windsor, NY/Cornwall) are standing out on both offense and defense… Voss is second on the squad with 31 kills and 44 assists, while she leads the team with eight service aces… Herringshaw has 23 kills and 13 blocks so far, while Octave leads the team with 47 digs and she is second in aces (seven).
SCOUTING SUNY POLY: The Wildcats are 2-1 after defeating Southern Vermont and SUNY Canton on the first weekend of play… Senior Ryenn Smith leads the team with 39 kills and 41 digs, while sophomore Casandra Campion has a team-best seven blocks.
AGAINST THE WILDCATS: Utica is 2-3 against SUNY Poly in the last two years… Last year the Pioneers fell 3-1 on the road and dropped a heartbreaker, 3-2 at home, after being up 2-0.
LOOKING AHEAD: UC will travel to the University of Rochester Tournament this weekend for a four-game set… The Pioneers open play at 6 p.m. on Friday against Beloit College.
