UTICA, NY- The Utica College women's basketball team lost a heartbreaker, 65-61, to visiting Houghton College in Empire 8 Conference action Saturday afternoon.
Utica led by as much as seven points in the first quarter, before Houghton was able to respond to make it 15-11 in favor of UC after the first ten minutes of play. The team traded points over the next 20 minutes, with the Pioneers holding on to a 49-42 lead. The visitors found their rhythm in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Pioneers 23-12 in the final ten minutes to come away with their eighth win of the season.
Junior
Ashley Mayo (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) matched her season-high of 20 points, and she also added three steals to pace the Pioneers. Senior
Calypso Carty (Pipersville, PA/Central Bucks West) netted 13 points and added four rebounds, while
Ashelyne Babb (Lynn, MA/Winthrop) had 10 points, three steals, and a team-best six assists.
Freshman
Marissa Woods (Westampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) tallied a career-high eight points, including 2-of-5 from beyond the arc. Classmate
Nicolette Conkin (Los Altos, CA/Homestead) grabbed a career-high eight rebounds, and sophomore
Rachel Hunter (West Islip, NY/West Islip) chipped in with seven points.
The Pioneers (5-11, 3-4 Empire 8) return to action Tuesday as they travel to Empire 8 foe, Ithaca College. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
