Utica Remains Atop ECAC West with OT Win Over Manhattanville

RYE, NY – Sophomore forward Justin Derlago (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Selkirk (MJHL)) tipped home the game-winner with 22 seconds left in overtime to lift visiting Utica College to a key 3-2 victory over Manhattanville in ECAC West Conference action Saturday night. The Pioneers improved to 8-1 in conference play and remain atop the ECAC West standings.

UC's Riley Egan (Lakewood, OH/Philadelphia (EHL)) put together his first collegiate two goal game, both coming in the second period, to help the Pioneers win their third straight game and improve to 13-7 overall. Kyle Lajeunesse (South Berwick, ME/New Hampshire (EHL)) added two assists while Mikhail Bushinski (Woodbury, MN/Kenai River (NAHL)), Dalton Carter (Toledo, OH/Northern Cyclones (EHL)) and Alex Roberts (Burnaby, British Columbia/Brooks Bandits (AJHL)) each added one assist.

Utica out shot the Valiants 32-31 on the afternoon. Freshman goalie Patrik Virtanen (Vantaa, Finland/Lincoln (USHL)) earned his second win of the weekend and improved to 8-4 overall after stopping 29 shots.

Both teams were held scoreless through 23 minutes of action until Egan found the back of the net to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead 3:29 into the second period.  Egan's opening goal was assisted by Lajeunesse.

Manhattanville tied the game up at 1-1 at the 11:11 marker of the second period before Egan gave the Pioneers the lead back with his second goal of the night.  Egan's fifth goal of the season gave the Pioneers a 2-1 lead with 2:06 left in the second period. 

Manhattanville tied the game at 2-2 with 10 seconds left in the second period and both teams were held scoreless in the third stanza to force overtime.

Utica outshot the Valiants 6-1 in the overtime period.  Derlago's game winner was tipped home after a shot towards the net by Bushinski. Derlago, the reigning ECAC West Player of the Week, now has three goals in his last three games played.

Tyler Feaver made 29 saves in net for the Valiants. Manhttanville's record is now 10-9-1 overall and 6-5 in conference play. 

The Pioneers have won five straight games against Manhattanville dating back to last season. 

Utica returns home on Friday night when it hosts Elmira College for a conference contest at 7 p.m.
