Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Women's Hockey Falls at #4/5 Elmira

ELMIRA, NY- Nationally ranked No. 4/5 Elmira College scored two goals in the first and third periods as it downed the Utica College women's hockey team 5-2 in ECAC West Conference action Sunday afternoon.

Elmira opened the scoring at 1:15 of the first period as Katie Granato scored on a breakaway for her 12th of the year.  Kristin Chivers and Maddie Evangelous assisted on the play.

The Soaring Eagles took a 2-0 lead at 8:11 of the first as Kiana Melvin's shot barely squeaked through the legs of Utica goalie Keira Goin (Dobbs Ferry, NY/Hotchkiss School) off the face off. Johanna Eidensten assisted on Melvin's first of the season.

Utica got one back at 13:00 of the second period as sophomore Elizabeth Dohner (Highlands Ranch, CO/Colorado Selects) netted her sixth of the year and third of the weekend of a feed from Gabrielle Schnepp (Northville, MI/Belle Tire).  The Soaring Eagles regained the lead just 3:10 later as Eidensten put in a rebound for her fifth of the year.  Louisa Lippiatt Durnell and Meg Lahey assisted on the power play tally.

The Pioneers made it interesting with 3:24 remaining in the game as Emily Coope (Phoenix, AZ/Colorado Tigers) took a pass from Danielle Haasbeek (Grand Forks, ND/Balmoral Hall) and fired a shot from the slot that beat Elmira goalie Kelcey Crawford on the glove side to bring the game within one.   Senior Jane Pagano (Erie, PA/Tabor Academy) also assisted on the play.

It was short lived however as the home team regained the two-goal cushion just 1:04 later as Evangelous netted her ninth of the year, from Granato and Maddy Jerolman.  Granato capped off the day with an empty netter to seal the victory.

Utica was 1-for-2 on the power play, while Elmira was 1-for-4.  Goin made 28 saves in the loss, while Crawford turned aside 24 shots to improve to 7-1-1 on the year.

The Pioneers (9-8-1, 4-6-1 ECAC West) return to action next weekend as they host Chatham University.  Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
