Albany, NY - The Utica College women's soccer team was on the road for an Empire 8 matchup against Sage. The Pioneers fell to the Gators by a score of 2-1, in overtime. The loss drops UC's record to 5-10-1 overall and 2-5 in conference play.
Jenna Mazza (Frankfort, NY/Sauquoit Valley)Â fired a nice shot early on, beating the keeper, to take a 1-0 lead for UC just 2:41 into the first half. The Gators outshot Utica by a count of 11-5 in the first half, but the orange and blue held a 1-0 at halftime.Â
Allison Wagner (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) made nine saves in the first half of play.
14:15 into the second half, Sage's Joleen Marfone cleaned up a rebound around the net and tied the game at 1-1. Although both teams had their chances, neither school could score in regulation. The game remained tied 1-1, taking it to overtime.
In just two minutes and 18 seconds into the first overtime period, Meagan Villa accepted a cross from Giovanna Fichera and scored the game-winning goal. Sage won the contest with a final score of 2-1.Â
UC 's goalkeeper,
Allison Wagner (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy), made 16 saves and has moved into third all-time in career saves in program history. The Gator's keeper, Emma Augustine, made six saves in the win.Â
The Pioneers have one more game this season, as they travel to face Alfred on Saturday. The E8 contest is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.Â
