Schenectady, NY – The Utica College field hockey team was on the road Saturday, to face Union College. The Pioneers lost in overtime, 3-2, as their record drops to 8-9 overall and 4-3 in E8 competition.
Although this was UC's last regular season game, the team has earned the No. 3 seed in the Empire 8 Conference Tournament. The Pioneers will face No. St. John Fisher on November 3rd at 2:30 p.m. in the first round of the E8 tournament, hosted by top-seeded Washington & Jefferson.
UC scored just after the seven minute mark as
Sydney Scaccia (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) received a pass, from
Jessica Belt (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder), and buried the first goal of the game. Before the game hit halftime, Union's Charlotte Leyland scored off of a Ciara Lyne assist to tie the game at 1-1. With neither team able to gain an advantage before the end of the half, the contest stayed tied at one-a-piece heading into the intermission.
In the second half,
Joanna Gaertner (Schuylerville, NY/Schuylerville) was able to break the tie. Gaertner gave Utica a 2-1 lead after she finished off a rebound around the net. Just three minutes later, Jenna Smith scored for Union to make the score 2-2. With nobody able to score before the end of regulation the game went into overtime. Union College's Laura Wind recorded the game-winning goal, to hand UC the 3-2 loss.
The Pioneers were outshot 33-18 in the contest and gave up 18 penalty corners in the contest. Goalkeeper,
Samantha Whitehouse (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich) tallied 15 saves in the loss for UC. Union's goalie, Heather Poisson, made 12 saves in the contest.
