Oneonta Pulls Away from Utica Hoops

ONEONTA, NY – The Utica College women's basketball team jumped out to a 14-9 first quarter lead but host Oneonta outscored the Pioneers 21-5 in the second quarter and never looked back on its way to a 60-40 victory on Tuesday afternoon.

Utica lost for the first time this season and saw its record fall to 2-1 overall while Oneonta remained unbeaten and improved to 3-0 on the season. Utica returns to action on Monday when the Pioneers travel to nearby Clinton, NY to take on Hamilton College in non-conference action at 7 p.m.

Ashley Mayo (Bronx, NY/Nanuet) finished the night with a team-high 10 points to go along with two rebounds and two assists. Junior Briannah Florian (Fort Plain, NY/Fort Plain) added eight points and three rebounds, while freshman Brigid Johndrow (Bristol, CT/St. Paul Catholic) added five points and four rebounds. Nicole Herringshaw (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) came off the bench and netted a career-high four points and grabbed three rebounds.

Alexa Amalbert led the Red Dragons with 16 points and four rebounds, while Leanne Corso chipped in with nine points to pace the home team.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 14-7 first quarter lead following a layup in the paint by Coralynn Maxwell (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) with 4:12 to go in the first.

The home team then used a 23-5 run in the next 14:12 of the contest to take a 30-19 lead into the locker room at the half.

Utica opened up the second half on an 8-3 run to cut its deficit to six points, 33-27, with 7:38 to go in the third quarter. However the Red Dragons were able to hold Utica to just five fourth quarter points, outscoring the Pioneers 18-5 in the final ten minutes of action to earn the 20 point victory, 60-40.

Oneonta held UC to 16-of-54 shooting in the contest. The Red Dragons also scored 21 second chance points and forced 19 Utica turnovers.

Alaina Tripp (Clyde, NY/Clyde-Savannah) posted a team-high eight rebounds and added two points, while Ashelyne Babb (Lynn, MA/Winthrop) chipped in with five rebounds, five assists and three points for the Pioneers.
