UTICA, NY- The Utica College women's basketball team finished the season on a high note as it downed visiting Elmira College 56-44 in the final game of the 2016-17 campaign.
The Pioneers wrap up the season with a 7-18 overall record, and a 5-11 mark in the Empire 8. Utica will graduate just one senior,
Calypso Carty (Pipersville, PA/Central Bucks West), whom the Pioneers honored in a special pregame ceremony.
Elmira led UC 13-10 after the first quarter. The teams traded the lead to start the second before the Pioneers took control for good on a layup by
Ashley Mayo (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) with 1:26 left in the second quarter. The Pioneers outscored Elmira 32-21 in the second half, and gave up just four points in the final ten minutes of action.
Sophomore
Rachel Hunter (West Islip, NY/West Islip) led Utica with 12 points on the day, while junior
Ashley Mayo (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) finished with ten points and ten rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Mayo also dished out a team-best four assists on the afternoon.
Calypso Carty (Pipersville, PA/Central Bucks West) capped off her final career game with 10 points.
Junior
Ashelyne Babb (Lynn, MA/Winthrop) and freshman
Nicolette Conkin (Los Altos, CA/Homestead) combined for 17 points, while
Alaina Tripp (Clyde, NY/Clyde-Savannah),
Maggie Tabone (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili), and
Coralynn Maxwell (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) also scored.
Danielle Cleary had 13 points for Elmira, while Rachel Vespucci recorded a game-high 15 rebounds and added 10 points.
