Kissimmee, FL- The Utica College softball team split on the final day of the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, FL as it topped Case Western Reserve 5-4 before falling to Albright College 3-1.
The Pioneers wrap up their spring training trip with a 4-6 record. UC will begin play up north on Tuesday as it travels across town to take on local rival, SUNY Poly. The first game of the double header is scheduled to begin 3:30 p.m.
Utica 5, Case Western 4- Game One Final
After a scoreless first two innings, Case Western got on the board in the bottom of the third as it plated one run. The Pioneers responded in the top of the fourth with three runs of their own.
Kassidy Ogren (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) hit a two-RBI double that scored
Alyssa Samborin (Schenectady, New York/Mohonasen) and
Nicole Rice (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South). The next batter up,
Lauren Dlugolecki (Voorheesville NY/Clayton A Bouton) singled to score
Jamie Miller (Boonville, New York/Adirondack), who pinch ran for Ogren.
The Spartans tacked on one run in the bottom of the fourth and scored two in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. The Pioneers scored the winning run in the top of the seventh thanks to a single by
Hayley Fredericks (Suffern, NY/Suffern) that scored Rice and
Sabrina Stransky (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place). The Utica defense was rock solid in the bottom of the inning to hang on for the victory.
Dlugolecki was 2-for-2, while
Madison Akots (Wynantskill, NY/Emma Willard School) was 2-for-3 and Stransky was 2-for-4 at the plate.
Samantha Whitehouse (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich), Ogren, Fredericks, and Rice each had one hit on the day, with Rice scoring a team-best two runs.
Brittany Meka (Averill Park, NY/Averill Park),
Emily O'Herien (Oneida, New York/Oneida), and Stransky each put in time in the circle, with Stransky picking up the win after 2 2/3 innings of work.
Utica 1, Albright 3- Game Two Final
The Pioneers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but Albright responded with one run in the fourth. The Lions Capped off the scoring in the top of the seventh with a pair of runs.
Utica totaled six hits in the game off the bats of
Samantha Whitehouse (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich),
Nicole Rice (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South),
Sabrina Stransky (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place),
Hayley Fredericks (Suffern, NY/Suffern),
Kassidy Ogren (Albany, NY/Colonie Central), and
Jacqueline Aronin (Naugatuck, Connecticut/Naugatuck High School). Fredericks scored the lone run, while Aronin tallied one RBI.
Lauren Dlugolecki (Voorheesville NY/Clayton A Bouton) had one steal in the outing. Stransky and
Brittany Meka (Averill Park, NY/Averill Park) combined for two strikeouts, with Stransky shouldering the loss.
Rice wraps up the trip with hits in nine of the team's ten games and totaled a team-best 13 hits in that span.
