Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women's Lacrosse Scores Early and Often to Down Caz

UTICA, NY- The Utica College women's lacrosse team scored 34 seconds into the game and never looked back as it cruised to an 18-6 victory over Cazenovia College in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon.  Junior Brooke Miller (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) tied her career-high with seven goals on the day.

Utica jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first 12:48 of the game, thanks in part to a hat trick by Miller. The Pioneers kept up the pressure by scoring seven of the next nine goals, before Caz was able to put on in with just five seconds remaining in the half to make it 13-4.

The second half slowed down a bit as the Pioneers fired just 12 shots on goal in the final 30 minutes, and scored five goals.  Senior Colleen Dowling (Fairport, NY/Fairport) had a career day as she finished with four goals and two assists.  Sophomore Katlyn Scarpinella (South Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) netted one goal and added three helpers and she also led the squad with five draw controls.

Mary Stuhlman (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) (two goals), Rachel Gelina (Westfield, MA/Westfield) (one goal, one assist), and Sara Hennessey (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) (two assists) each finished with two points on the day.  Hennessey was also Utica's top defender as she scooped up five ground balls and caused three turnovers.  Rebecca Plunkett (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park), Hailee DuMont (Wilkes-Barre, PA/James M. Coughlin), and Noelle Capriglione (New Milford, CT/New Milford ) rounded out the scoring for Utica.

Hali Vandermeulen (Walden, NY/Valley Central) picked up her second career win as she played 22:30.  Amanda Lupo (Auburn, NY/Skaneateles) tallied two saves in 19:23, and junior Emily Holtshouser (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) made two saves and allowed just one goal in 19 minutes of action in her first career appearance.

The Pioneers (2-3) return to the field this weekend as they host Houghton College. In the 2017 Empire 8 Conference opener.  Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
