UTICA, NY- A two-game home stand awaits the Utica College women's lacrosse team this week. The team will first play Morrisville State College Tuesday at 4 p.m. Then the Pioneers will faceoff against SUNY Poly this Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Last Time Out: The Pioneers picked up a win in their Empire 8 Conference opener against the Houghton Highlanders, 17-7, on Saturday… Senior
Rebecca Plunkett (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) netted three straight goals just 4:43 after the opening draw control and she finished with a team-high five goals in the victory… Sophomore
Katlyn Scarpinella (South Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) tied Plunkett for the team lead in points as she netted three goals and added two assists of her own… Utica goalies
Hali Vandermeulen (Walden, NY/Valley Central),
Emily Holtshouser (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry), and
Amanda Lupo (Auburn, NY/Skaneateles) recorded a combined eight saves on the day… The Pioneers improve to 3-3 overall, and it is the second straight game that the team has scored more than 15 goals.
#ONELOVE Game: On Wednesday both the men's and women's lacrosse teams will be partnering with the One Love Foundation… The goal of the One Love Foundation is to honor Yeardley Love by bringing an end to Relationship Violence by educating, empowering and activating campus communities in a movement for change… Yeardley Love was a women's lacrosse player at the University of Virginia who was beaten to death by her ex-boyfriend in 2010… During both the men's and women's games on Wednesday, the Pioneers will be holding a 50/50 raffle and collecting donations to support the One Love Foundation… For more information about Yeardley Love or the foundation, please visit

Moving on up:
Rebecca Plunkett (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) is moving up the ranks in the College's career record book… Plunkett is currently tied for fifth all-time with Kat Glynn '04 with 128 career goals… She needs three more to pass Jennifer Munisteri for fourth all-time… Plunkett is also currently seventh in the record book with 144 career points… She needs two more to tie Munisteri for sixth place, and she is five points behind 2012 graduate Katlyn Banker, who is currently fifth all-time… She is also second all-time with 186 draw controls.
Dishing It Out: Sophomore
Katlyn Scarpinella (South Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) leads the team with 11 assists, while senior
Sara Hennessey (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) is right behind her with 10 assists… Scarpinella is also second on the squad with 19 total points, just one shy of Plunkett's mark of 20 points… Hennessey has contributed 13 points this season.
Miller Time: Junior
Brooke Miller (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) was named the College's Female Athlete of the Week Monday after she exploded for nine goals last week… Miller matched her career-high of seven goals in Utica's 18-6 win over Caz on Tuesday… She also added two tallies against Houghton on Saturday… On the season, she ranks second on the team with 16 goals.
Pioneer Goalie Status: Freshman
Hali Vandermeulen (Walden, NY/Valley Central) has started all six games for Utica… She ranks fourth in the Empire 8 conference in saves per game (7.0) and has the conference's fifth best save percentage (.500)… She also owns a 9.73 goals against average.
Scouting Morrisville State College: The Morrisville State Mustangs are 3-2 overall… The team suffered a heartbreaking 12-11 loss at home against SUNY Canton on Saturday… Morrisville junior Gianna Branca recorded a team-high four goals in the loss while junior goalie Kallie George made five saves… Branca is off to a hot start this season as she leads the team in goals scored (18) and points (27)… George, on the other hand recorded 37 saves in the five games she played this season.
Against the Mustangs: The Pioneers beat the Mustangs 10-8 on the road last year (3/23/16)… Plunkett tied her season-high five goals in the victory…
Amanda Lupo (Auburn, NY/Skaneateles) earned her first collegiate victory after stopping two shots… Utica once again beat Morrisville State 16-10 on the road on April 16, 2014.
Scouting SUNY Poly: The SUNY Poly Wildcats kicked off their season with three straight wins (3-0)… They recorded an 11-10 overtime road victory against Houghton on March 11, beat Sage 15-9 in their home opener last Tuesday, and crushed Alfred 18-7 Sunday on the road… Junior Mari Ames, freshman Kayla Prosinski, and senior Krysta Beha have each scored more than ten goals this season… Ames leads the team with 14 goals and 20 points… Prosinski recorded 13 goals and 14 points this year while Beha has 12 goals and 19 points… Junior goalie Brittany Waterbury made 19 saves in the three games she started this season.
Against the Wildcats: The Pioneers also played the Wildcats on the road last season… Utica College graduate and current volunteer coach,
Courtney Wheeler (Ava, NY/Rome Free Academy) netted a career-high six goals in the Pioneers 16-4 victory… Lupo earned her second career win in net for the Pioneers as she stopped five shots in 54:49 of work… Utica is 5-0 against the Wildcats in the last five years.
Looking Ahead: After the two-game home stand, the Pioneers will hit the road Saturday to take on Empire 8 foe, Elmira College… Game time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
