Women's Lacrosse Outmuscles Morrisville

UTICA, NY- The Utica College women's lacrosse team erased a 2-1 deficit by scoring seven straight goals as it downed Morrisville State 16-7 in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon.

Three players recorded a game-high four points, led by senior Rebecca Plunkett (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) and junior Brooke Miller (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy), who each had four goals on the day, while sophomore Katlyn Scarpinella (South Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) had three goals and one assist.  Plunkett passed Jennifer Munisteri '06 to move into fourth place on the College's career goal scoring list with 132 goals in her four years as a Pioneer.  She also moved up to sixth place on the career points list (148), just one shy of 2012 graduate Katlyn Banker, who is fifth on the list.

The Pioneers trailed twice in the game, falling down 1-0 just 49 seconds into play, and again losing 2-1 with 23:52 remaining in the opening half.  However, a goal by sophomore Natalie Capriglione (New Milford, CT/New Milford) sparked the Utica offense as the Pioneers scored seven consecutive goals over the next 18:40 to take a commanding 8-3 lead.

Utica added eight more tallies in the second half to pick up its third straight win, and fourth victory overall. Morrisville meanwhile drops to 3-3.

Senior Colleen Dowling (Fairport, NY/Fairport) led all players with three assists on the day, while classmate Sara Hennessey (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) added two helpers.  Senior Tewasherake Barnes (Akwesasne, NY/Salmon River) found the back of the net twice and Capriglione and freshmen Hailee DuMont (Wilkes-Barre, PA/James M. Coughlin) and Rachel Gelina (Westfield, MA/Westfield) each had one goal.

Dowling collected a career-high seven draw controls, while Maggie Notter (Clifton Springs, NY/Midlakes) led the defense with six caused turnovers and eight ground balls.  Freshman Hali Vandermeulen (Walden, NY/Valley Central) made five saves and allowed just five goals in 57 minutes of work, while Amanda Lupo (Auburn, NY/Skaneateles) also saw time in net.

The Pioneers turn right around Wednesday as they face local rival, SUNY Poly.  Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
