UTICA N.Y.- The Utica College women's lacrosse team hits the road Wednesday as it travels to Skidmore College for a non-conference match up. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Last Time Out: Six different players scored as the Pioneers defeated SUNY Potsdam 12-9 in the season opener on Sunday… It marked the first time in four years that the Pioneers won their first game of the season… Seniors
Rebecca Plunkett (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) and
Colleen Dowling (Fairport, NY/Fairport) each scored a team-high three goals in the game… Junior
Brooke Miller (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) and sophomore
Katlyn Scarpinella (South Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) each scored two goals while senior
Sara Hennessey (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) and freshman
Hailee DuMont (Wilkes-Barre, PA/James M. Coughlin) each scored one… In her first collegiate start, freshman goalie
Hali Vandermeulen (Walden, NY/Valley Central) made 11 saves, and held Potsdam to 1-for-5 on free position opportunities.
Players off to a Strong Start in 2017: Following their performance last Sunday, Plunkett and Scarpinella now lead the team with four points each… In the Empire 8 conference rankings, Plunkett and Vandermeulen are tied for first in groundballs per game (5 groundballs each)… Plunkett and Dowling are first and second, respectively, in the E8 in draw controls (Plunkett: 6 Dowling: 5), and Vandermeulen leads the conference in saves per game (11)… Plunkett is now second in program history with 172 draw controls to her credit.
Scouting Skidmore College: The Thoroughbreds lost their season-opener 12-9 on the road against Ithaca on Feb. 25, but the team later recovered from that defeat and won their home opener 10-9 against Babson College last Sunday… Sophomores Cas Szwajkowski, Anna Boogaerts, and senior Tyler Phillips each scored two goals in the victory… Senior goalie Megan Kolopsky stopped 14 shots and picked up two groundballs… Szwajkowski is off to a strong start this season as she leads the team with eight goals and nine points.
Against the Thoroughbreds: Utica is 3-2 against Skidmore in the last five years… The home team has won the last three meetings between the two teams… Last year Utica came away with a 13-11 victory as
Katlyn Scarpinella (South Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) netted the game-winner with two minutes remaining in regulation… Scarpinella finished with four goals on the day, while
Brooke Miller (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) had three goals, and
Mary Stuhlman (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and
Rebecca Plunkett (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) each had one tally.
Looking Ahead: After Skidmore, the Pioneers will return home this Saturday to take on the Clarkson University Golden Knights… Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
