Baseball Suffers First Home Loss of the Season

Utica, NY – The Utica College baseball team lost to Empire 8 opponent Stevens, 15-13, on Saturday. This marks the Pioneers first loss at home so far this season, making their record 12-12 overall and 5-5 in E8 competition.
 
Stevens got out to a hot start, scoring four runs in the first inning. However, the Pioneers answered back in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the first. Tim Quinlan (Monroe, CT/Masuck) and Ben Julian (Wynantskill, NY/Troy) registered back to back home runs making the score 4-3. Two batters later, Adam Nell ( Vernon, NY/VVS) hit a two-run homer of his own, giving UC a 5-4 lead heading into the second inning.
 
Utica added two more runs in the third inning to make the score 7-4. The Pioneers held their lead through the sixth inning as the scoreboard read, 9-8, heading into the top of the seventh. The Ducks then went on to score seven more runs in the final three innings to take back control of the game, earning the two run victory.
 
JT Ross (New York Mills, NY/New York Mills) went 3-for-5 at the plate in the contest, with two RBI's, a double, and two scored runs. Ben Julian (Wynantskill, NY/Troy) batted 2-for-3 with two RBI's, a double, and one home run. Tim Quinlan (Monroe, CT/Masuck) and Adam Nell ( Vernon, NY/VVS) both finished with one home run, two RBI's, and one run scored. Alex Rocci (Utica, NY/Notre Dame) started on the mound for UC and struck out five batters, although he did not receive a decision. Dom Caccioppoli (Circleville, NY/Pine Bush ) received the loss on the mound for the Pioneers, making his record now 2-1 this season.
 
Michael Mule batted 4-for-5 for the Stevens Ducks hitting one double to help earn four RBI's in the contest. A.J. Falconite went 3-for-5 at the plate with one double and three RBI's. Alex Detweiler rattled off one home run, bringing in two RBI's. Zeph Walters earned the win as the starting pitcher in the contest for the Ducks, making his record 4-2 now this season. Walters allowed just three earned runs and struck out 14 batters in the game. Charlie Ruegger entered the game in relief, earning the save.
 
The Pioneers will be back on the home field Sunday for a doubleheader against Stevens. The teams will play one seven inning game and one nine inning game. Game one is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
