Utica Softball Sweeps Local Rival SUNY Poly

MARCY, NY – The Utica College softball team earned a pair of run-rule victories on the road at SUNY Polytechnic on Friday afternoon.  The Pioneers rode pitcher Sabrina Stransky (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place)'s two-hitter to a 9-0 run-rule win in five innings in game one.  Catcher Jamie Miller (Boonville, NY/Adirondack) went 2-for-4 with four RBIs in game two to help the Pioneers cruise to a 15-5, five inning, run-rule win in game two.

Utica's record improved to 17-19 overall and the Pioneers will return to the field on Saturday when they host nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College in Empire 8 Conference action at 1 p.m.

Senior Kassidy Ogren (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) went 5-for-6 with six RBIs and four runs scored over the course of two wins, while Samantha Whitehouse (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich) went 3-for-5 with five runs scored and four RBIs.

Utica 9, SUNY Poly 0 – Softball Game One Final
UC jumped out to 6-0 lead in the second inning of game one and never looked back as the Pioneers cruised to a 9-0 victory against their crosstown rival. Ogren hit a three-run home run in the second inning to spark the early rally.  Sabrina Stransky (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) went all five innings on the mound and allowed just two hits while striking out seven as she earned her third win of the season.

Kimberly Beattie (Levitton, NY/Division Ave) gave the Pioneers a 7-0 lead with a single to left center in the third inning that scored Dominique Soto (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place). UC capped the scoring in the fourth inning after an Ogren single scored Whitehouse and Sabrina Stransky (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) doubled to left field to score Nicole Rice (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) to give UC a 9-0 lead that held through five innings.

Jamie Miller (Boonville, NY/Adirondack) went 1-for-4 with one RBI in game one, while Samantha Whitehouse (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich) went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Ogren finished game one going 2-for-2 with four RBIs and one run scored.

Utica 15, SUNY Poly 5 – Game Two Final
The Pioneers scored 15 runs on 14 hits in game two and went on to top the Wildcats 15-5 in five innings to complete the sweep. Jamie Miller (Boonville, NY/Adirondack) went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored in the contest, while Kassidy Ogren (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs in game two.

Jacqueline Aronin (Naugatuck, CT/Naugatuck High School) was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs, while Samantha Whitehouse (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich) also added two hits.

UC posted three runs in the first inning to set the tone for the contest.  They added four more runs in the third inning to take a commanding 7-1 lead. Miller got things going in the third inning when she doubled home Whitehouse and Aronin to secure two of her four RBIs.

Aronin and Miller were at it again in the fourth inning as they each registered two-RBI singles to center field and the Pioneers pushed their lead to 11-2.

UC sealed the victory with four runs in the fifth inning to take a ten run advantage.  Ogren and Aronin both posted RBI doubles in the fifth for the Pioneers.

Alyssa Samborin (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) picked up her second victory of the season on the mound for UC as she pitched all five innings and struck out two.
