Box Score 2 CORTLAND, NY- The Utica College volleyball team dropped both matches on the first day of the annual Red Dragon Classic, hosted by SUNY Cortland. The Pioneers fell to Lebanon Valley 3-0 in the first game, before dropping the nightcap to Fredonia, 3-1.
Utica 0, Lebanon Valley 3- Game One Final
Facing a 2-0 deficit, the Pioneers battled back in the third set, but it was not enough as Lebanon Valley held on for a straight-set victory (9-25, 12-25, 16-25). Junior
Hannah Voss (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) was Utica's top performer as she led the squad with six kills, two service aces, and 19 digs.
Allison Della Penna (Batavia, NY/Batavia),
Nicole Herringshaw (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse), and
Meaghan Romaguera (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout) each had five kills to pace the UC attack.
Taneill Davis (Coram, NY/Longwood) also added two kills in the loss.
Junior
Marissa Faroni (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) led the team with nine assists, while sophomore
Jessica Macheda (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) chipped in with five assists of her own. Senior
Abigail Mosenthin (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) finished second on the squad with 11 digs, followed by Faroni (eight), Romaguera (six), and Macheda (five). Herringshaw led the Pioneers at the net as she record two blocks.
Utica 1, Fredonia 3- Game Two Final
Once again the Pioneers found themselves in a 2-0 hole (10-25, 18-25), but this time they were able to battle back to take the third set 25-22. Both
Hannah Voss (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) and
Nicole Herringshaw (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) led the Pioneers with eight kills apiece. The duo also led the UC defense as Voss led the squad with 14 digs, while Herringshaw totaled four solo blocks.
Abigail Mosenthin (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) and
Lindsey Hannel (Victor, NY/Victor) combined for six kills on the evening, while
Kristen Clapp (Phoenix, NY/Phoenix) tallied one kill.
Marissa Faroni (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) led the Pioneers with 20 assists, while
Jessica Macheda (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) had 11 assists to her credit.
The Pioneers return to action Saturday as they face Stockton University at 1:30 p.m. before wrapping up the weekend against Cortland (4 p.m.)
