Clarkson Rallies to Earn OT Win Over Utica

UTICA, NY – The Utica College men's soccer team jumped out to a 1-0 first half lead but could not hold on as visiting Clarkson University rallied with a second half equalizer and a penalty kick goal in overtime to lift the Golden Knights past the Pioneers 2-1 in extra time at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Utica dropped its first contest of the season and saw its record move to 2-1 on the year, while Clarkson rebounded from a loss on Saturday and improved to 2-1.

UC's Thomas Muller (Camillus, NY/Bishop Ludden) netted the lone goal of the evening for the Pioneers in the 31st minute when he tipped home his first goal of the season after a nicely played ball into the offensive end by Julian Fonseca (Rocky Hill, CT/Bridgton). Fonseca now has two assists this year.

Clarkson's Mack Walton knotted the score up at 1-1 at 67:54 when he scored his first of the year off an assist by Justin Packard.  The 1-1 score held through regulation and the two teams were headed to overtime for the second time in as many meetings.

Just 1:51 into the overtime period the Pioneers were called for a takedown in the box and the Golden Knights were awarded a penalty kick by the referee. Clarkson's John Furcick took the PK and converted on the right side of the net to end the contest and seal the victory for the visitors.

Utica goalie Jonathan Side (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh) made several big saves on the afternoon and finished the contest with seven stops.  Ian Roeloffs made two saves in net for Clarkson. UC earned a 7-6 advantage on corner kicks, while Clarkson finished the contest ahead in the shot category 18-6.

The Pioneers are set to host the Utica College Invitational this coming weekend as they welcome New Paltz, Cobleskill and New Rochelle for the four team, two day, tournament at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.  The weekend will open up on Saturday as New Paltz plays Cobleskill at 11 a.m., followed by Utica and New Rochelle at 1:30 p.m. The Pioneers will take on New Paltz Sunday morning at 11 a.m. before the tournament wraps up with Cobleskill versus New Rochelle at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
