Utica, NY – The Utica College women's soccer team hosted SUNY Poly on Thursday for its home opener. The Pioneers dropped to 0-2-1 on the season, losing by a score of 1-0.
The game remained tied 0-0 until the final minute of the first half when SUNY Poly was awarded a free kick just outside of the penalty area. SUNY Poly's Meral Evke fired a shot that deflected off the wall of UC defenders and rolled into the back of the net, for the only goal of the contest.
Utica controlled the ball for the majority of the game, but was unable to score on its opportunities. The Pioneers outshot the Wildcats 13-4 in the match and 9-2 in the second half alone.
Goalkeeper
Allison Wagner (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) made two saves on the night for UC. SUNY Poly's Angela Bartlett made seven saves in net, earning the shut out to help the team improve to 2-0 on the season.
The Pioneers will return to action on Saturday, as the play host to DeSales University (3-0). The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
