Utica, NY -- The Utica College men's soccer team is on the road Friday night for an E8 contest against #21 Stevens. The final match of the year is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
Last Time Out: UC lost to Hobart on the road in its last game with the final score reading, 3-1. Thomas Muller (Camillus, NY/Bishop Ludden) netted the lone goal for the team, scoring his second of the season. The Statesmen would go on to score three unanswered goals to secure the win at home. Goalkeeper Randy Miksch (Lake Villa, IL/Warren Township) came up with nine saves in the loss. The record for Utica is now 5-11-1 overall and 1-5 in the Empire 8.
So Long Seniors: Tonight's contest will mark the final match of the year for the Pioneers, as the end of the game will conclude the careers for the 2019 senior class. Here is the full list of seniors from this year's team: Alex Purcell (Lansing, NY/Lansing), Julian Fonseca (Rocky Hill, CT/Bridgton), Nicolas Diaz (Commack, NY/Commack), Andrew Ruyack (Chester, NY/Monroe Woodbury), Paul Mitchell (Belfast, Ireland/CBS), Calvin Mends (Accra, Ghana/Tema International), Luke Tantillo (Clinton, NY/Clinton), Enock Bunyon (Accra, Ghana/Adisadel), and Jordan Smith (Tolland, CT/Tolland).
What Lies Ahead: Although the team is graduating nine players from this year's roster, the returners that will be back for 2019 will play a key role next season. Thomas Muller (Camillus, NY/Bishop Ludden) returns for his senior campaign next fall, after posting two goals and team-high four assists this season. Tucker Marvin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) and Patrick Hynes (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem) have each registered two scores in 2018 and are set to return for another year. UC will have consistency behind the net as both Jonathan Side (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh) and Randy Miksch (Lake Villa, IL/Warren Township) will be back for next season.
Scouting Stevens: The Ducks are ranked #21 in the country and are currently atop the Empire 8 with a 14-2-1 record overall and an undefeated 6-0 mark in conference. The only two losses for Stevens have come at the hands of Oneonta and #20 Franklin and Marshall, both teams were nationally ranked at the time of competition. Daniel Aversano and Adam Silva lead the way with combined totals of 41 points, 15 goals, and 11 assists. Goalkeeper Aaron Henry has recorded eight shutouts this season and has only given up eight goals on 93 shots faced.
Season Wrap-Up: With the Pioneers being mathematically eliminated from the E8 Tournament, Friday night's matchup with #21 Stevens will conclude the 2018 season.
