Big First Half Gives UC the Edge Over Wells

Aurora, NY – The Utica College women's basketball team faced off against the Wells College Express in a road game on Saturday. The Pioneers improve to 2-0 to start the season, defeating Wells by a score of 65-47.
 
Brigid Johndrow (Bristol, CT/St. Paul Catholic) and freshman Sydney Przygoda (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) led the way with big time performances on the day. Johndrow scored a career-high 20 points to headline her seven rebound, five assist, and five steal stat-line. Przygoda posted the first double-double of her young collegiate career in the win, finishing with 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
 
It was all Utica College in the opening period as the team held a 20-6 lead heading into the second quarter. The Pioneer offense was rolling throughout the first half as the team put up 40 points to own a 21-point halftime lead. Sydney Pryzgoda was all over the glass, snagging eight offensive rebounds in the first half.
 
Wells came out strong in the third quarter, outscoring UC 21-10 in the period to cut the deficit to 10 points. Holding a 50-40 lead going into the fourth, the Pioneers shut down the Express to seal the win by allowing just seven points all quarter. It marks the fourth time this season that the Utica defense has held a team to single digit scoring in a quarter.
 
Nicolette Conkin (Los Altos, CA/Homestead) was the third double-digit scorer for UC, recording 10 points and a game-high six assists. As a team, the Pioneers grabbed a total of 19 offensive rebounds in the game. The team generated easy offense through playing strong defense, scoring 22 points off of turnovers.
 
Wells was led by Shelby Medovich's 19 points and eight rebounds on an 8-for-14 shooting night from the floor. Carley Ryan contributed with seven points, eight rebounds, and six assists in the loss. The Express are now 0-3 overall to start the year.
 
The Pioneers return to action on Tuesday for their home opener against Oneonta. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 6 p.m.
