Naz Scores in Final Minute to Top #9/13 Utica

Rochester, NY -- The Utica College men's hockey team dropped a 4-3 decision against host Nazareth College in United Collegiate Hockey Conference action on Friday night. Naz's David Powlowski netted the game-winner on the power-play with just 45 seconds left in regulation.

The Pioneers, ranked No. 9/13 nationally, snapped a two-game conference winning streak and saw its record move to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the UCHC. Naz picked up its first league win of the season after tying two straight games against Neumann and Manhatanville at home last weekend.

Nick Yzaguirre (Chicago, IL/Charlotte Rush (USPHL-Premier)), Regen Cavanagh (Chesapeake, VA/Sioux Falls Stampede (USHL)) and Joey Rutkowski (Rome, NY/Smiths Falls Bears (CCHL)) each netted a goal for the Pioneers.

The Golden Flyers came out of the gates hot with two first period goals against the Pioneers, who were playing in their first road game of the season. David Powlowski netted the first goal of the game just 1:41 into the contest. Powlowski finished the night with two goals. Justin Miller gave Naz a 2-0 lead at the 9:06 mark of the first.

Utica's Nick Yzaguirre (Chicago, IL/Charlotte Rush (USPHL-Premier)) netted his first collegiate goal in his first collegiate game as he got the Pioneers on the board before the end of the first period.  Utica's opening goal was assisted by Zach Borsoi (Brossard, Quebec/Gloucester (CCHL)) and Justin Derlago (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Selkirk (MJHL))

The Pioneers knotted the score at 2-2 5:01 into the second period when Cavanagh netted his fourth of the season off an assist from Josh Haskin (Troy, NY/P.A.L. Jr. Islanders (USPHL))

Naz took the lead back when Mateo Capriotti scored, unassisted, 4:48 into the third period to make the score 3-2 in favor of the home team.

Rutkowski tied the contest for the second time when he scored his first of the season off assists from Justin Allen (Rochester, NY/Rochester Monarchs (USPHL-NCDC)) and Shawn Lynch (Syracuse, NY/Ottawa Jr. Senators (CCHL)). Rutkowski's goal came at the 12:34 mark of the third period and set the score at 3-3.

Naz earned two late power-plays and capitalized on the second man-advantage as Powlowski jumped on a loose puck in front and scored the game-winner past Utica first year goalie Sean Dickson (Millbrae, CA/Hampton Roads Whalers (USPHL-Premier)) with 45 seconds left in regulation.

Dickson finished the night with 29 saves as his record moved to 2-2 on the year. Michael Tilford came up big in net for the Golden Flyers as he stopped 38 shots in the win. UC outshot the home team 41-33 on the night. Naz scored the only power-play goal of the night as the two teams combined to go 1-for-10 with a man-advantage.

Utica returns to action for game two of a five game road trip on Friday when they travel to Lebanon Valley College to take on the Dutchmen at 7 p.m.
