Utica, NY – The Utica College women's basketball team defeated Alfred University, 80-32, on Friday.
Ashelyne Babb (Lynn, MA/Winthrop) scored 26 points, making her the 13th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points. UC improved to 9-15 overall and 5-10 in conference play.
After starting the second half with a 29-point lead, the Pioneers kept its foot on the gas throughout the third quarter. Utica would lead by as many as 41 points in the period. With around five minutes left until the fourth quarter,
Ashelyne Babb (Lynn, MA/Winthrop) finished at the basket to record her 1,000th career point. UC entered the final quarter of play with a 62-23 lead, before coasting to the 48-point victory at home.
Babb finished with a game-high 26 points, seven rebounds, and five assists on the night.
Briannah Florian (Fort Plain, NY/Fort Plain) contributed 11 points, six boards, and a season-high of four blocks in the win. Freshman
Kimberly Soriano (Queens, NY/Monsignor McClancey Memorial) notched a career-high 10 points off the bench, while classmate
Jeslyn Files (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) poured in eight points (2-for-3 3-pt).
UC took control of the game early on as the team held a 6-0 lead just two minutes in. Strong defense and good shooting stretched the Utica lead to 16 points by the end of the first quarter. Throughout the final 3:05 of the second quarter,

Alfred was led by Chloe Kottwitz's 10 points in the loss. Amanda Figueroa finished with eight points and eight rebounds in the game. The Saxons struggled to score against Utica's defense, as they shot just 16.9 % (10-for-59 FG) from the field. The team's record falls to 2-22 overall and 0-15 against Empire 8 opponents.
The Pioneers are back home on Saturday, as they play host to Stevens for Senior Day. UC's last game of the season is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
