Strong Second Half Powers Potsdam Past Utica

UTICA, NY – SUNY Potsdam outscored visiting Utica 9-2 in the second half to pull away on its way to a 14-4 victory in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.  UC senior Ryan Desveaux (Bowmanville, ONT/St. Stephen Catholic) led the way for the Pioneers with a team-high three goals.  Desveaux now has 88 career points and needs 12 more to join the 100 point club.  He also ranks seventh on the College's all-time list with 68 career goals.

Utica's record fell to 0-2 on the year and the Pioneers will return home to the friendly confines of Charles A. Gaetano Stadium on Wednesday when they host Marywood in their home opener at 4 p.m.

Senior Nick Yelich (Lancaster, NY/Depew) played a part in all four goals for UC as he netted one and assisted on all three of Desveaux's goals. Yelich leads the team with seven points this season (three goals, four assists).  He also reached 60 career points on Saturday (29 goals, 31 assists).

The first 7:48 of the contest featured a pair of goals from each team.  Desveaux and Yelich connected on both of the Pioneers' first quarter goals to set the score at 2-2 with 7:12 left. Potsdam responded with the next three goals of the contest to take a 5-2 lead into the half.

UC made it 5-3 after Desveaux netted his third of the game early in the third quarter.  Unfortunately for the visitors, Potsdam netted the game's next nine goals to push its lead to 11 with 6:08 remaining in the contest.  Yelich added a goal with eight seconds left in the contest to set the final score at 14-4.

Nick Alexander (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) led the Pioneers defense with three caused turnovers and five ground balls. John Hanlon (Coconut Creek, FL/St. John Paul Academy) and goalie Harrison Bower (Northport, NY/Kings Park) each scooped up four ground balls. Bower made 14 saves on the afternoon.

Tayte Murray and Josh Huiatt each totaled five points on three goals and two assists to pace the Bears.
