Keuka, NY – Keuka College outscored visiting Utica College 12-5 in the final 30 minutes of the contest to earn a 15-8 victory in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.
Nick Yelich (Lancaster, NY/Depew) led the Pioneers with three goals and remains the team leader with 15 points on eight goals and seven assists this season.
UC (2-3) snapped a two-game winning streak, while Keuka improved to 3-1 overall on the season. Utica returns to the turf on Saturday when the Pioneers open up Empire 8 Conference play at Houghton College. The contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
Utica's
Jake Bratek (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) was a key contributor with two goals for the Pioneers, while
John Hanlon (Coconut Creek, FL/St. John Paul Academy) added one goal and one assist.
Dylan Dunham (Elbridge, NY/Jordan Elbridge) and
Ryan Desveaux (Bowmanville, ONT/St. Stephen Catholic) each added one goal for the Pioneers. Desveaux leads the Pioneers with 12 goals this season.
Jimmy Vienneau (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) won 12-of-25 face-offs and picked up a team-high six ground balls for the Pioneers.
Nick Alexander (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) chipped in with five ground balls and three caused turnovers, while
Matt Fedullo (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) added three ground balls and one caused turnover. Alexander leads UC with 10 caused turnovers this season.
Utica's
Harrison Bower (Northport, NY/Kings Park) returned to net and stopped 15 shots for the Pioneers. His counterpart, Ryan Mavretish, made 12 saves for the Wolves.
The Pioneers rallied from a 3-1 first quarter deficit with two goals from Yelich in the second quarter to knot the score at 3-3 at the half.
The Wolves came out firing in the third quarter, scoring the first four goals, to take a 7-3 lead with 8:56 to go in the third. UC answered with two third quarter goals, but could not erase the four goal deficit, and the home team led 9-5 headed into the fourth and final quarter.
Keuka then dominated the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter and took a 14-5 lead with 8:37 to go in regulation.
The Pioneers scored three of the game's final four goals but the comeback bid proved to be too late as the Wolves ran away with a seven goal victory.
