Lake Placid, NY -- Senior's
Roman Ammirato (Williamstown, NJ/Union College (ECAC)) and
Dalton Carter (Toledo, OH/Northern Cyclones (EHL)) of the Utica College men's hockey team were named American Hockey Coaches Association CCM Division III Men's Hockey All-American's at the NCAA Championships student-athlete banquet in Lake Placid, NY on Thursday night. Ammirato and Carter became just the second and third players in program-history to be named East Region First Team All-American selections.
The duo joins Jimmy Sokol (2005, 2nd Team), Tim Coffman (2012, 3rd Team) Louie Educate (2013, 1st Team), and Trever Hertz (2014, 2nd Team), as the fifth and sixth Pioneers in program-history to earn All-American status. The Pioneers have now secured representation on the All-American team in four of the last seven seasons.
Ammirato capped his final season in the blue and orange as the inaugural United Collegiate Hockey Conference Player of the Year after finishing in the top ten nationally in points per game (9th – 1.59 ppg). His 22 goals this past season are a new program-record and his 43 total points rank second on the College's all-time single season list behind Jimmy Sokol, who posted 46 points during his All-American campaign back in 2005. Ammirato's average of .81 goals per game this season rank sixth nationally and he tied for second in the country with 10 power-play goals. He also led the nation with five short-handed goals. The sharp shooting transfer from Division I Union College spent two seasons with the Pioneers and will graduate tied for ninth on the College's all-time scoring list with 78 career points at UC.
Carter, who was a UCHC All-Conference First Team selection, will graduate as the most decorated defensemen in program-history. He is the first Utica defender to earn an All-American nod after finishing the season ranked 12th nationally with an average of 1.50 points per game. His 28 assists this past season rank second on the College's all-time single season list. Carter will graduate as the top scoring defensemen in program-history after posting 82 points (23 goals, 59 assists) in 106 career games played. Carter's 59 career assists rank third on the College's all-time list.
Following their senior campaigns both Ammirato and Carter were signed to professional try-outs in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). Ammirato has played in four games with the Tulsa Oilers, an affiliate of the NHL's St. Louis Blues. He has three assists and a +5 rating. Carter played in two games with the Toledo Walleye (Detroit Red Wings affiliate) and managed a +4 rating.Â
The Pioneers capped their 2018 campaign ranked in the top ten in the USHCO.com and D3hockey.com national rankings. On March 3rd, the Pioneers defeated Elmira College 8-3 at the Adirondack Bank Center to claim the inaugural UCHC Conference Tournament title, marking the first conference tournament title in the program's 17 year history.
Utica tied the school record with 21 victories and set a new program record with 386 total points. UC's 133 goals were a new single season record. UC's team goals against average also set a new school record (2.03).
