UTICA, NY- The Utica College softball team remains on the road Wednesday as it travels to Ithaca College for a non-conference match up. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: The Pioneers are coming off a split at Skidmore College on Sunday… UC dropped the first game 9-4 before rebounding to earn a 12-4 run-rule victory in game two… Sophomore catcher
Jamie Miller (Boonville, NY/Adirondack) was 5-for-5 on the day with three walks and four runs scored… Senior
Sabrina Stransky (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) was 3-for-4 in game two with five RBIs, and classmate
Dominique Soto (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) was 4-for-8 with three RBIs and one run scored over the two games, including her first home run of the season in game one…
Alyssa Samborin (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) picked up her first win of the year as she allowed just two earned runs in 4.1 innings of work.
LEADING THE WAY: Senior
Sabrina Stransky (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) leads the team with a .487 batting average and 1.026 slugging percentage… She also leads the Empire 8 with five home runs and 23 RBIs… Junior
Hayley Fredericks (Suffern, NY/Suffern) is right behind Stransky with a .480 bating average and two home runs in 10 games.
MILLER NAMED UC ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Sophomore catcher
Jamie Miller (Boonville, NY/Adirondack) was named the UC Female Athlete of the Week on Monday… Miller had a perfect weekend, going 5-for-5 in the team's doubleheader against Skidmore College on Sunday… In game one, the sophomore had three base hits in three at bats despite the 9-4 loss... In a big 12-4 win in game two, Jamie went 2-for-2, scored four runs, and drew three walks to cap off her breakout weekend… On the season, she ranks third on the team with a .455 batting average and she has a team-best .556 on base percentage.
SCOUTING ITHACA: The Bombers are ranked No. 24 in the latest NFCA national poll, released Wednesday… Ithaca is 7-3 overall after its trip to the Sunkissed Classic in Kissimmee, FL March 11-16… Junior Vanessa Brown leads the squad with a .412 batting average, while pitchers Emily Holden and Haley Congdon have ERAs of 2.05 and 2.30, respectively.
FAMILIAR FOE: Ithaca is no stranger to Utica as the teams were both Empire 8 Conference foes before Ithaca moved to the Liberty League in the fall of 2017… Utica is 4-6 against Ithaca in the last five years, with for of those games being decided by just one run… Last year, the teams split with Utica overcoming a 3-0 first-inning deficit to come away with a 4-3 win, while Ithaca earned a 6-5 come-from-behind win of its own…
LOOKING AHEAD: The Pioneers will take on The Sage Colleges on Saturday. Game time is currently scheduled for 1 p.m. in Utica.
